Residential enclave in the foothills of Bakersfield

The Bakersfield Country Club sits atop the foothills of northeast Bakersfield, where a collection of homes line the curving, sun-washed streets and have access to boastful views of the distant Tehachapi Mountains. “This area is very prestigious and sits right on the golf course,” says Alex Daredia, a Realtor with Century 21 who has been selling homes in the area for over 6 years. “A lot of the homes have character and big lot sizes.” Just 6 miles east of Downtown Bakersfield, the community offers locals a residential enclave in the foothills, and it often feels a bit cooler than the heart of the city as the higher elevation captures the cleaner air that coasts over the mountains and into the valley.

Custom-built estates and single-story homes

Residential streets wind around the Bakersfield Country Club, leading to an eclectic collection of homes ranging from custom estates to mid-century ranch-style homes. “What really separates this area from the rest of the east side are the houses,” says Adam Belter, an Associate Broker with the Belter Group at Coldwell Banker who has been selling homes in the area for over 13 years. Around the 18-hole championship golf course, stately homes sit on sprawling estates with up to half an acre of land. On the same hilltop street as the esteemed Ablin-Frank Lloyd Wright House, four-bedroom custom-built estates with private balconies, in-ground pools and views of the Tehachapi Mountains start at around $535,000. Further south around the base of the hills, three-bedroom ranch-style homes sit on modest lots, with prices ranging from about $245,000 to $365,000.

Prestigious country club and nearby park

The community is anchored by the Bakersfield Country Club, which is one of the few naturally hilly golf courses in the city. In addition to the clubhouse and 18-hole golf course, members enjoy access to a fitness facility, outdoor pool and four lighted tennis courts. For a change of scenery, reciprocal memberships are honored at the city’s other two country clubs – Stockdale and Seven Oaks – so locals can take a break from the familiar course and tee up on the other side of town. Residents are also about 2 miles from Heritage Park, which has a basketball court, a skatepark and a playground for kids to explore.

Access to big-box shops and local restaurants

While there are no retail options in the Bakersfield Country Club area, residents are minutes from the East Hill Promenade. The shopping center is located just northwest of the community and has a Target, Walmart and Home Depot. For groceries or a bite to eat, locals can head south to Niles Street. This commercial strip includes casual restaurants such as Rusty’s Pizza Parlor, Mexican restaurants such as La Fonda Taqueria Y Mariscos and bars such as Stella’s Sandtrap. For the necessities, Niles Plaza includes a Vallarta Supermarkets and FoodMaxx.

Festivities at the country club

The Bakersfield Country Club hosts a variety of social events for members, including weekly Sunday brunches and seasonal dinners. Popular festivities include the Harvest Festival, which celebrates the beginning of fall with pumpkin carving, a scavenger hunt and a seasonal menu.

Nearby hospital and poor air quality

Residents are less than 2 miles from the Kern Medical Hospital, which boasts the only Level II Trauma Center in the area. Due to the geography of the Central Valley and the prevalence of industries such as agriculture and petroleum, Bakersfield has historically suffered from high levels of pollution and poor air quality. In the 2023 State of the Air report, the American Lung Association declared Bakersfield as the city with the worst year-round particle pollution.
