A suburban lifestyle in northeast Bakersfield
The aptly-named City in the Hills is a suburban neighborhood tucked away in the Tehachapi Mountains, 8 miles from downtown Bakersfield. “It’s a beautiful area right by the canyons. I've had some friends that live in the area, and it’s really nice,” says Anish Mohan, a multifamily unit developer with OM Development and Construction, who has worked in the Bakersfield area for nearly a decade. Because it’s removed from downtown, the neighborhood is quiet, and homes tend to be a bit more affordable. The area saw a population spike during the COVID-19 pandemic, and the market is responding with newly-constructed homes and renovated parks. “The amount of people moving here, especially from LA, has been absolutely insane,” says Erik Van Denk, a Realtor with Central Valley Property Advisors who’s worked in the area for nearly two decades. “A lot of people are relocating simply because it's on the outskirts. It's more private here.” City in the Hills has a mixture of new construction, homes in a gated community and a 55-plus community.
City in the Hills is located Northeast Bakersfield with neighborhoods centered around the park.

Newly-constructed ramblers are also popping up, ranging from $450,000 to $550,000. No matter where people settle in the area, properties have manicured lawns and wide sidewalks. People can park in expansive, two-door garages or paved driveways.

Air pollution in Bakersfield
Bakersfield’s air quality is polluted because of its geography; It’s positioned in a valley near the mountains, which traps pollution, and the city’s agriculture industry keeps dust trapped in the air. The San Joaquin Valley Air Pollution Control District has programs like Charge Up!, which funds electric vehicle chargers and reduces car emissions.
