Oildale is well known for the Oilfields in North Bakersfield.
Oil fields to the north and varying affordability
Head north from downtown Bakersfield across the Kern River and step into a region known for its oil fields. Kern River Oil Field is the northern backdrop of the neighborhood, spanning over 10,000-acres. Oildale’s reputation isn’t the best, but homes still sell in the area. “There’s varying affordability in Oildale. It can be good for investors and first-time homebuyers,” says Michael McCracken, who has been a Realtor for 18 years and owns properties in Oildale. “But there can be high crime, especially with drugs.” Community programs, such as Church Without Walls, do their best to help people in the area. “Oildale gets a bad rap, but there are hardworking people who are working hard to combat what’s going on,” says Pastor David Holt, who has been ministering for five years and leading the church for three. There are other organizations like Church Without Walls throughout Oildale, all aiming to lighten the load of residents.
There are several mobile home parks located throughout Oildale, Ca.

Mobile homes in the area sometimes are boarded up and abandoned, but others are double-wide with new updates. To the west, the homes get a bit newer and the lots more uniform; east of Airport Drive, there are more cottages and compact bungalows, which can sell between $200,000 and $300,000. Homes tend to be close together, with little space in front and back yards. There are also duplexes scattered throughout the neighborhood, usually as ranch-style homes.

Speedway to the north and local ministering
For heart-pounding excitement, catch a frenzied race at the Bakersfield Speedway which has events lined up throughout the year beginning in March and ending in late November. Bakersfield itself has events throughout the year, including live concerts at the Bakersfield Music Hall of Fame. The Church Without Walls offers events throughout the week, including a weekly movie night on Friday, and a barbecue on Thursday while offering a shower ministry to those in need; including a shower trailer and hygiene kits. “It’s an opportunity to get to know the community more,” Holt says. “It can take a long time to get through to someone. Just knowing their name and sharing God’s light is a huge part.”
Important to Know
