Old River, located in the southwest corner of Bakersfield, is a charming blend of rich farmland and new housing developments. This quiet neighborhood offers the best of Central Valley living. Although just a few minutes’ drive to shopping areas, wineries and music venues, Old River residents enjoy a suburban, almost rural lifestyle. The north end of the neighborhood is developed but acres of vineyards and produce grow to the west and the south. The community is bordered to the north by Panama Lane. Valley Children’s Hospital, one of the nation’s premier pediatric healthcare facilities, is located here. The hospital is dedicated to caring for kids from prebirth to young adults.

This is a neighborhood of tree-lined residential streets and well-landscaped homes with private driveways and attached garages. “Homes in the area range from about 1,120 square feet to more than 3,000 square feet. Lot sizes vary between 7,000 and 18,700 square feet,” according to Jeffy Dufloth, a Bakersfield Realtor with Prestige Properties. Flower-filled planters and benches welcome visitors. Dogwalkers and joggers wave as they pass on the wide sidewalks. Most homes in the area are modern Craftsman or Mediterranean with red tiled roofs. Homes in Old River sell for between $300,000 to $610,000. Expect to pay about $610,000 for a 4-bedroom home on a spacious corner lot with state-of-the-art kitchen and quartz countertops.

Old River schools get high grades

Buena Vista Elementary School holds a B grade from the school ranking website, Niche. The school serves 717 students and has a student-teacher ratio of 24-1. Earl Warren Junior High has a B-plus grade and a 23-1 student-teacher ratio. Independence High School also has a B-plus rating. The high school has many athletic, academic and social clubs, including its United Nations Club which has been recognized by area news stations for its volunteer work both locally and internationally.

Minutes from retail and restaurants

Less than 3 miles from Old River, Gosford Village is home to Kohl’s, Ross Dress for Less and Petco. In the shopping district, one will also find an urgent care center and an animal hospital. Awash with things to do

In April, the Bakersfield Marathon brings in runners from across the world. The West Coast Beer & Taco Festival is an August event featuring beer and tacos from dozens of local restaurants and breweries. In September, the Bakersfield Village Fest is held on the grounds of the Kern County Museum. The city’s longest running festival is a celebration of music, food, beer and wine. September also brings the Kern County Fair, which features rides, livestock exhibitions and plenty of other activities.

Getting to and from Old River

This is a car dependent area. From Old River, it is 11 miles to downtown Bakerfield. Meadows Field Airport is 18 miles away. Interstate 5 and Highway 99 may both be accessed via Panama Road and Taft Highway.

Bakersfield is home to agricultural and petroleum industries — both of which have high emission rates — the area often struggles with air pollution. “The percentage of people in Kern County diagnosed with asthma is 17.7%. This is higher than the state average of 15.1%,” says Michelle Corson, Public Relations Officer at Kern County Public Health Services Department.
