From suburb to center
Residents who’ve lived in Bakersfield for any length of time know that the city has never had a freeway connecting the eastern and western parts of town. But that is about to change. The new 58 parkway connector, due to be completed in 2024, runs through Park Stockdale, what the city calls the Centennial Corridor — "an older neighborhood of ranch-style homes that were once horse properties years ago," says Cecilia (Cissy) Clark, broker associate with Cissy Clark & Company. “This was considered a suburb back in the day. Now, it’s so central to the city.” Just 3 miles from downtown and less than a mile from the 99 and 58 freeways, Park Stockdale gives residents fast access to all the city offers.
More backyard for the buck
“You can get a lot of house for the money here,” Clark says. “While it’s an older neighborhood, the properties have large backyards, and you can’t beat the location.” Homes in the Park Stockdale start at $200,000 for small, midcentury-modern houses. The cost increases with the square footage, lot size and special features, such as covered patios, fireplaces and backyard pools. Larger bi-level homes are also available, some with five bedrooms and enough space for extended family. Even the occasional horse property will come on the market, like a hacienda-style home on Garnsey Avenue that sold for upwards of $750,000 and offered nearly 1.5 acres of land, a pole barn and six large stables. One- to three-bedroom condos are also available along Dunsmuir Road on the neighborhood's western edge, walkable to shops and restaurants. They start at $150,000.
