Small homes in a remote mixed suburban feel

Though the Bakersfield suburb was named after a pile of pumpkins back in the 30s, Pumpkin Center hasn’t grown pumpkins since the 60s. What the neighborhood lacks in pumpkins, it makes up for in cozy starter homes and affordability, all rolled into a mixed suburban and rural feel. “It’s not far from the freeway, and you have easy access to basics and grocery stores,” says local Realtor Shanti Brinsfield of Watson Realty. “But you’re still far out enough from Bakersfield that you have more of a remote feel.”

Mobile homes and Mediterranean styles

Homes are neatly clustered in Pumpkin Center’s subdivisions, some with pristine front lawns and sidewalks. “Most of the homes are built in the 60s to 80s ranging from entry-level to modest homes on larger lots,” Brinsfield says. Mobile homes in the Southland and West Hills Mobile Home Parks are situated on smaller, tidy lots and range in price from $50,000 to $135,000. Newer homes in modern subdivisions have Mediterranean and Spanish-revival influences and often have two-car garages. A typical three-bedroom, two-bathroom single-story home may list between $370,000 and $450,000, depending on square footage.

Proximity to Highway 99

Additionally, bus stops along Taft Highway provide public transportation. Travelers catch domestic flights at Meadow Field Airport, north of Bakersfield and just 20 minutes away from Pumpkin Center.

Bakersfield's air quality

Bakersfield has a bowl-like atmosphere with little airflow due to its eastern boundary of the Sierra Nevada mountains and its western border of the California Coastal Ranges. There is a concentrated area of poor air due to the proximity of surrounding railways, freeways and oil rigs. Bakersfield has consistently been listed as having some of the worst air quality in the nation by the American Lung Association. To help address the problem, the San Joaquin Valley Air Pollution Control District has put incentives in place, including annual no-burn days and subsidies for purchasing electric cars.
