A small riverside suburb in Bakersfield
Quailwood is a small Bakersfield suburb hugging the south side of the Kern River with a namesake park and elementary school. It’s near major roads, such as Stockdale Highway and Coffee Road, which link people to downtown, 5 miles away. “You’re close to everything right there. About every single dining and shopping option is on Stockdale Highway,” says Erik Van Denk, a Realtor with Central Valley Property Advisors who’s worked in the area for nearly two decades. Van Denk says there’s a mixed demographic of younger and older people in Quailwood. “Home prices were affected by the 2008 crash; it made them more affordable, causing older people to move here,” he says. “But since it is close to the university, younger people live around there.” The California State University, Bakersfield, is less than a mile away.
20th-century homes with renovations
Quailwood has one-story homes from the 1960s and 1970s priced between $320,000 and $470,000. Prices depends on renovations; some homes have upgrades like in-ground pools and gated porches. “Houses here sell quickly because the neighborhood is close to the Financial District,” says John Lindsay, a Realtor with Elite Team Properties who’s been selling locally for nearly three decades. Properties sit close together, shaded by tall, skinny palm trees. Most front yards have enough space for small gardens and abut paved driveways and sidewalks. A handful of fourplexes in the neighborhood cost between $655,000 and $830,000, depending on upkeep. Most people park their cars in driveways. Bakersfield’s air quality is polluted because of its geography; it’s positioned in a valley near the mountains, which traps pollution. Dust gets trapped in the air since it's also a heavy farming area.
Spend the day at Town and Country Village Shopping Center
People can run errands at the Town and Country Village Shopping Center on Stockdale Highway, just west of the neighborhood. The plaza includes an Albertsons, a Trader Joe's and a UPS store; it also restaurants like Bagels and Blenderz, which offers indoor and outdoor seating, and Miyoshi Japanese Restaurant, an eatery serving sushi and miso soup. Cafe Rio Fresh Modern Mexican is a popular local fast-food spot on Coffee Road. Past Town and Country plaza on Stockdale Highway is the Shops at River Walk, an outdoor shopping center with tenants like Crumbl, Target and Yard House. It’s next to the Park at River Walk, which has an outdoor amphitheater.
Well-regarded athletic teams at West High School
The Fruitvale Elementary School District and the Kern High School District serve Quailwood students. Kids can attend Quailwood Elementary School, which earns a B from Niche, before advancing to Fruitvale Junior High School, graded A-minus. The school has a notable robotics team that made it to the VEX Robotics World Championships in 2024. Kids may move on to B-minus-rated West High School, which offers athletic programs including girls' golf. The girls' volleyball team went undefeated in 2024. California State University, Bakersfield is about a mile west of the neighborhood, and the nearest private school is Stockdale Chrisitan School, which teaches kindergarten through eighth grade about 2 miles away. Neighborhood churches include the Westside Church of Christ and St. Phillip the Apostle Church.
Hang with neighbors at Quailwood Park
Quailwood Park is a small neighborhood green space with a playground, pavilions and large grassy fields shaded by eucalyptus trees. Yearround, people visit the Kern River for fishing, kayaking or boating, and they walk, run or bike along the 30-mile paved trail along the river. The community hosts a Fall Carnival every October at the local elementary school, consisting of costume contests, candy and food trucks. A mile south, the Stockdale Country Club has a private, 18-hole course.
Getting around Bakersfield
People drive on Truxton Avenue to reach downtown Bakersfield, while Coffee Road leads to California State Route 58, a major east-west highway. Kern Transit has public bus stops for commuters along Coffee Road and Stockdale Highway. The Meadows Field Airport is 10 miles away, and Dignity Health—Mercy Hospital Southwest is about 2 miles away.
