South Bakersfield neighborhood with new additions
Rexland Acres is a neighborhood 6 miles south of downtown Bakersfield that has experienced an injection of new life over the past few years. “The city has done a lot of beautification and street renovations in this area,” says Autumn Mitchell, a Realtor with Tobias Real Estate who has been selling homes in Bakersfield for over four years. Murals from local artists in Rexland Acres Park and the opening of Linnell Brama Park, a recreation area two blocks west of the neighborhood, are some of the new initiatives. While houses in Rexland Acres are mostly midcentury builds, many have undergone renovations, and some new builds have popped up in recent years. Golden Valley High School, which serves the southern portion of the neighborhood, opened in 2003.
The new Linnell Brama Park
November 2024 saw the opening of Linnell Brama Park, a $5.5 million project funded through a statewide award. Walking paths and sand volleyball courts sit within the park, and kids can play on one of two playgrounds, while adults utilize outdoor fitness equipment. Basketball players can shoot hoops on the courts at Rexland Acres Park, which also has a soccer field and open green space. The Bakersfield Sports Arena sits off Cottonwood Road, hosting rodeo events and concerts throughout the year.
Single-family renovated homes
Most single-family homes in Rexland Acres are midcentury ranch-style builds costing between $220,000 and $275,000. Some houses with extensive renovations cost between roughly $340,000 and $400,000. “Renovations range from complete tear downs to people who just want to remodel the inside,” says Julissa Menacho of Realty One Group, who has nearly a decade of experience in the area. “It’s raised the value of a lot of homes.” Some newer homes built in the late 2010s are available in the southern part of the neighborhood. Most houses sit on quiet roads with private driveways and attached garages. Well-lit sidewalks make it easy to walk to school or a neighbor’s home and most houses have fenced-in front and backyards. Some lawns have large palm trees, while others have California oaks.

Dining at Los Patroncitos food truck
There are no brick-and-mortar restaurants in Rexland Acres, but a few food trucks sit off South Union Avenue. Ronak Dhaba serves Indian favorites, while locals can visit Birrieria Los Patroncitos #7 for tacos and other Mexican dishes. Both have benches around the trucks for picnic-style dining. Mariscos Las Cazuelitas is a Mexican seafood restaurant located a couple blocks west of the neighborhood with a full bar and a live Mariachi band on the weekends. For groceries, locals can head 2 miles west on Panama Lane to Vallarta Supermarkets and Walmart.
Mariscos Las Cazuelitas can be found at 188 E. Fairview Rd.
Learning at Golden Valley High School
Kids in Rexland Acres may attend Fairview Elementary, which is within walking distance of many homes. Fairview is a part of the Greenfield Union School District and holds a C grade on Niche. McKee Middle School holds a B-minus ranking, as does Golden Valley High School, which is a part of the Kern High School District. Golden Valley offers career and technical education classes like agricultural business.
Bakersfield's air quality issues
Bakersfield locals are accustomed to the heat; temperatures regularly exceed 100 degrees in the summer months. The area also suffers from poor air quality, because of its valley location and agricultural industry.
Rexland Acre Park is found near Fairview and S. Union and sits next to Fairview elementary.
Park renovations have been made possible with the hands of volunteers and city workers alike.
Rexland Acre Park has a rich heritage that is shown throughout the murals.
