Suburban setting close to downtown Bakersfield

Stone Meadows, about 9 miles south of downtown Bakersfield, is a convenient community with single-family homes, mostly dating to the early 2000s. "Stone Meadows has a suburban feel. It's a little more remote but still close enough to the necessities," says Realtor Shanti Brinsfield of Watson Realty, a specialist in corporate relocation and short sales. Bakersfield sits in the southern end of the San Joaquin Valley, roughly between Sequoia National Park and the Los Padres National Forest.

Stone Meadows' contemporary single-family homes

Stone Meadows' contemporary single-family homes have traditional elements like shingled roofs, while others have Tuscan- and Mediterranean-influenced touches like terracotta tile roofs and stucco exteriors. Two-car garages and short, paved driveways are common. "The homes are smaller in Stone Meadows than in neighboring Stone Creek, and they have fairly modest-sized lots," Brinsfield says. Three and four-bedroom homes of about 1,400 to 2,400 square feet are the norm. Prices range from $335,000 to $550,000.

Panama Lane shopping, new stores around Hosking Avenue

Shopping centers on Panama Lane fulfill most retail needs. "Panama Lane has everything people need for groceries and essentials. And that area is growing a lot," says Jose Torres, a Realtor at Re/Max Golden Empire with over five years of experience in Bakersfield. There's an Albertsons and an Aldi on Panama, and a Sprouts Farmers Market opened in March of 2024. Dutch Bros Coffee is a drive-through spot for caffeinated favorites and energy drink blends with sugar-free and added boba options. Molly J's Restaurant specializes in American standards and homemade pies. New development in recent years around Hosking Avenue includes a Starbucks, a Taco Bell and a Samco Food Store with a gas station.

Granite Pointe Park and fairgrounds events

Granite Pointe Park has basketball and volleyball courts and a playground. People, often accompanied by their dogs, stroll the paved walkways and surrounding green fields. "It's popular for small family picnics. I don't think it has restrooms, though," says Keith Powell, Recreation & Parks Recreation Supervisor for the city of Bakersfield. He mentions that people might also visit Stone Creek Park, which is a little more than a mile away but does include restrooms. The Kaiser Permanente Sports Village Soccer Complex is nearby and frequently used by soccer leagues for children and adults. Year-round events are held at the Kern County Fairgrounds, about 6 miles from Stone Meadows. They include concerts at the Bud Pavilion, classic car shows and livestock exhibitions. The highly anticipated Bakersfield Christmas Town is a top fairgrounds event known for its interactive light shows. Christmas Town continues for over a month, with wintry delights like a sledding hill, an ice-skating rink and a holiday hayride.

Buck Owens and the Crystal Palace

Stone Meadows' Green Lawn Cemetery is the final resting place of singer Buck Owens, who moved to the area in the 1950s and became one of the most successful artists known for the "Bakersfield sound," a honky-tonk and rock-influenced style of the era. Owens was named to the Country Music Hall of Fame and the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame. Buck Owens' Crystal Palace, a music memorabilia museum and performance venue, brought musicians and fans to downtown Bakersfield for nearly three decades. The Buck Owens Private Foundation announced the sale of the property in July 2024.

The oil industry has affected air quality

Bakersfield has air quality issues resulting from extensive oil drilling in the area. When pollutant levels are high, those with sensitivity are advised to wear face masks, use air purifiers indoors and limit outdoor activities.
