Centrally located within the North Baltimore eruv

Cross Country, a tight-knit community within the North Baltimore eruv, offers many amenities for members of the Jewish faith. “The infrastructure is very important to daily life,” says Barry Nabozny, owner at RE/MAX Premier Associates, who has worked in the community for more than 35 years and lived in the area for over 55 years. On the Sabbath, due to the eruv, people can carry their prayer shawls and push strollers from their mid-1900s homes and condos to the many nearby shuls. On Thursday and Friday, many folks head to the area's kosher butchers, bakers and grocery stores to stock up on fresh-baked challah bread and other supplies. With a private Hatzalah ambulance service and Sabbath accommodations at nearby Sinai Hospital, residents are supported in emergencies as well. Though the community is zoned for Baltimore Public Schools, the majority of families choose to send their children to one of the highly rated Jewish private schools in the area.

Kosher shopping on Reisterstown Road

Reisterstown Road, about a half mile west of Park Heights Avenue, is the main commercial strip. Residents can shop at Seven Mile Market or Market Maven, both of which offer a 100% kosher selection of food. For fresh meats and in-house-made kosher deli, people go to Wasserman & Lemberger, owned by a Switzerland-born butcher. “It’s very special,” Nabozny says. “He makes his own hot dogs, and he has some very unique meats like aufschnitt.” Another huge draw, he says, is the Greenspring Shopping Center, just a few blocks north of Cross Country. It’s home to three strictly kosher restaurants: Serengeti Steakhouse, Accents Grill, and Cocoaccino's. The shopping center even has a kosher liquor store.

An upcoming community space at the Pikesville Armory

Many neighbors are within walking distance of the Wellwood Activity Center, a pocket park with a playground, basketball courts and a few picnic tables. Several larger green spaces are also within a 2-mile drive, including the members-only, 18-hole course at the Suburban Club and the gardens at the Cylburn Arboretum. In January of 2024, the nonprofit Pikesville Armory Foundation broke ground on a multi-million-dollar project to convert the historic armory buildings and 14-acre grounds into community-use spaces, including maker studios and event halls.

Brick homes and condos in Cross Country

A mix of single-family homes and condos rest along the community’s curving streets. Private driveways line the edges of compact yards, which often have manicured lawns, hedges and small shade trees. Prospective buyers might find brick midcentury moderns, ranch-style homes and slate-roofed Colonial Revivals priced between $500,000 and $1.5 million. “Real estate pricing has been on the rise within the eruv community,” Nabozny says. There are also condos in late 1900 brick complexes, which range from around $100,000 to $300,000, depending on the condition and number of bedrooms. The Western Run brook, which runs through the neighborhood, sometimes floods during heavy rains. Lenders may require the purchase of flood insurance to protect homes located nearest the brook.

Hatzalah Carnival and events at the Pikesville Armory

In September, the Alvin S. Mintzes Hatzalah of Baltimore holds a fundraising carnival complete with a petting zoo, activities for kids and fair food. The Pikesville Armory also hosts concerts and events, including the 2024 Taste of Northwest Festival and the Jazz at the Armory summer concert series.

School options near Cross Country

The community is zoned for Baltimore City Public Schools, beginning with Cross Country Elementary/Middle School, which earns a C on Niche. From there, some students attend Forest Park High School, rated a C-minus. Many families opt to send their kids to private Jewish schools, however. The B-rated Talmudical Academy of Baltimore offers preschool through 12th-grade education for boys, and the B-plus-rated Bais Yaakov School for Girls is its female counterpart. Parents can bring their toddlers to Beth Tfiloh Dahan Community School to give them early learning support through the Challah Tots program, and the school’s preschool through 12th-grade curriculum receives an A rating on Niche.

Car travel along Cross Country Boulevard and Park Heights Avenue

Well-maintained sidewalks allow for travel within the community, and Cross Country Boulevard and Park Heights Avenue are the main thoroughfares for car travel. Drivers can access Interstate 695 via Park Heights Avenue, and Cross Country Boulevard leads toward Interstate 83. Though the Maryland Transit Administration offers CityLink bus stops and a nearby Metro station, many residents prefer not to use public transportation. In emergencies, the Hatzalah's team of volunteers can quickly transport residents to Sinai Hospital.
