With a flourishing community garden, recreation centers and access to downtown Baltimore, “Curtis Bay is traditionally a working-class, blue-collar town with a lot of industry,” says Fred Golding, Realtor with RE/MAX. “There are a lot of townhouses and opportunities for investment, and the area offers some truly gorgeous views of the bay and Baltimore City.” The area is a mix of residential and industrial properties, including a hub for the CSX Railway and half a dozen other manufacturing plants. But it’s not all industrial, and a couple of parks and recreation centers can be found here. Most notably, Filbert Street Garden is a horticultural haven featuring farm animals, garden plots and honeybees. The neighborhood’s CAP Index score is an overall 7 out of 10, higher than the national average of 4. However, the score for homicide is 9.

Access to downtown Baltimore
For getting around Curtis Bay, the CityLink Silver bus line runs along Church Street and Virginia Avenue. But after the tragic collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge, how drivers travel along major highways has changed in the area. Curtis Bay residents can reach downtown Baltimore by hopping on Frankfurt Avenue and driving about 7 miles north. There, they can reach the Johns Hopkins Hospital, the National Aquarium or one of many theaters and museums in town. However, now that there is one less bridge, traffic can become very congested during peak times, both on the underwater tunnel routes and on suspension bridges. The Baltimore Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport is about 10 miles east via Interstate 695.
Locally owned restaurants and nearby shopping malls
Fred and Margie’s bar and restaurant is known for their Maryland crab cakes, bacon burgers and hefty portions of shrimp. Soda Pop Shop across from Curtis Bay Park is a corner store selling alcohol and a few household essentials. Down the street, Frank’s Bay Tavern has a friendly bar atmosphere with pool tables and their famous Bay Slinger cocktail. For longer shopping trips, locals can find plenty of options along the Governor Ritchie Highway, including Save A Lot, Walgreens, Dollar General and a few fast-food chains like Popeyes and Dairy Queen. Home Depot and Costco are about 3 miles south via Ordnance Road and Route 173.

Filbert Street Garden’s goats and honeybees
Filbert Street Garden offers residents access to first-come, first-serve community garden plots and volunteer opportunities. The garden hosts a collection of goats, ducks, chickens and the largest community bee yard in Maryland. The garden also offers lessons to locals so they can learn about animal husbandry and horticulture for their own backyard farms. However, residents must obtain the proper zoning and building permits and a permit from Baltimore’s Office of Animal Control before they can raise their own animals. “Seeing cool resources like this [Filbert Street Garden] is wonderful,” Golding says. “There are so many families and kids who live there so having that green space, those animals, it’s so special. It just goes to show, we’re not an urban jungle, we have green spaces, too.” Next to the garden is the iconic Curtis Bay Water Tower, which was built in 1930 and covered with an intricate mosaic of masonry and clay bricks. Off virginia Avenue is the Farring-Baybrook Recreation Center, which has several indoor and outdoor recreation spaces such as their public pool, baseball field, playgrounds and sports pavilion. The Farm Alliance of Baltimore encourages locals to care for the Black Butterfly Teaching Farm and flower garden. Curtis Bay Park, right across from the railyard, is a nice green space with a playground and basketball court.

Brick townhouses and cozy Curtis Bay bungalows
Curtis Bay “is one of the opportunities where people can buy a house that’s still relatively inexpensive. People are able to build some roots and equity that will impact their financial future for the rest of their lives,” Golding says. Detached family homes range between cozy brick bungalows and narrow Colonial-inspired residences, though brick row houses take up the larger portion of the neighborhood. Neighbors can be tightly packed here, where duplexes and single townhouses sit tightly packed in neat rows. Those in need of major renovations can be found at prices between $40,000 and $85,000, while move-in ready homes can range from $120,000 to about $350,000.
