Relaxed living north of downtown Baltimore
Finding a small-town atmosphere within the city limits may seem challenging, but East Arlington comes close. Brick rowhouses and Tudor-inspired family homes sit on shaded grid-like streets, where community members gather or sit on front stoops to chat. With an Aldi nearby, a funeral home, a post office and a few takeaway restaurants, the area gives residents a cozy place to call home. “It’s a historic, charming, close-knit community,” says Eze Amadi, a Realtor with Fathom Realty. “Families have been there for generations but are welcoming to anybody new. It’s a melting pot.” The neighborhood is close to nearby Hanlon Park and the Maryland Zoo, so it’s easy to get outside on nice days. Students study within the Baltimore City Public School system, which is graded an overall C-plus on Niche. The CAP Index score for crime in East Arlington is 5 out of 10, which is slightly higher than the national average of 4. However, the score for homicide is 9 out of 10. When it’s time to explore downtown, the city center is only 7 miles away via Interstate 83.
Although East Arlington is comprised mostly of detached homes there are rowhome options.

On the northwest side of town, row houses and duplexes styled in square red brick buildings from the 1930s through the 1960s can be found up for auction or direct sale. Depending on their state of renovation, prices can range between $85,000 and $275,000 for move-in-ready units. On the southeast side of town, New England homes with gambrel roofs and brick chimneys line quiet grid-like streets shaded by maples and oaks. Tudor-revival houses with exposed brick, stucco siding, sloping roofs and arched front doors create storybook-like curb appeal. Add in some classic Colonial-revival styles with columned front porches, and the area gives off a hint of the past. The Ashburton Area Association contributes to the area’s beauty and charm as well, as their organization focuses on the preservation of the area. The area’s “Homes are larger,” Amadi says. “They have a good amount of space and bring families together.” These larger homes and townhouses can cost between $175,000 and $400,000.

Towanda Recreation Center sports fields and organized events
The Towanda Recreation Center is a great spot across the train tracks for getting together to play sports or explore the playground. While the Towanda pool is currently under renovation and won’t be open until the summer of 2025, the area’s soccer fields are open to everyone when an event is not being held. Locals can also call the Towanda Center to set up a time to use the fields if they want to host their own games or tournaments. Other nearby green spaces, like Hanlon Park by the Ashburton Reservoir, are less than 2 miles away. With walking trails and a small playground, Hanlon Park is a great space to hang out with family and friends during nice days. East of town, Druid Hill Park is home to a disc golf course, playscapes, the Maryland Zoo and the Rawlings Conservatory greenhouse and garden. It’s easy to spend a day exploring the massive grounds and checking out all that the park has to offer.
Trains at Mondawmin and navigating downtown Baltimore
For a wider variety of stores and restaurants, locals can catch the train at the West Cold Springs Metro Station and head to Mondawmin or Owings Mills. From Mondawmin, they can also use the light rail line to head downtown, which is about 4 miles away. Downtown, they’ll have access to the Johns Hopkins Hospital, the National Aquarium and the many shops, restaurants, bars and nightlife that the city offers. Most locals can get around Baltimore by using Interstate 83, but within the neighborhood, they can walk around or bike from end to end. For weekends away, the Baltimore Washington International Airport (BWI) is about 13 miles south via Interstate 195.
Community programs and organizations support East Arlington
Local organizations in town work hard to support the community and create a comfortable space for residents. The Urban Youth Initiative Project at Towanda Recreation Center provides students with supplemental education opportunities. Some of their programs include social-emotional learning, history, hygiene, and even career readiness. The Epsilon Omega chapter on Dolfield Avenue is the first and only Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority chapter in the North Atlantic Region since 1921. Their focus is on helping children and their families by sponsoring events like annual back-to-school drives and mental health resource fairs.
