Walkable city suburb in East Baltimore
On the east side of downtown Baltimore is Gay Street, a small, five-by-five block radius densely populated by residents and commercial storefronts. A major draw to this part of the city is Johns Hopkins Hospital, which takes up the area’s south side. Residents are also attracted to this community for its walkability and convenient easy access to public transportation, like the Metro. “As with most neighborhoods in the city, one block is very different from the next,” says John Keller, a Broker at Blue Star Real Estate with more than 30 years of experience in the Baltimore area. “A quick drive through Gay Street, and you’ll see some areas are the hangout spots and some areas are quieter.” Locals can take advantage of Madison Square Park, a green respite that takes up the majority of the west side, or they can head a mile south to a restaurant-heavy district pocketed with local flavors.
Grabbing produce and lunch at Northeast Market
On the other side of Johns Hopkins Hospital is Northeast Market. This community marketplace features fresh and local vendors selling wares ranging from produce and baked goods to meats and seafood. The market also offers a few take-out eateries and storefronts that sell items like flowers and books. On the west side of town, there are more takeout options, from soul food plates at Church Square Carryout to breakfast staples at The Dog House Carryout. “There are lots of restaurants focused around the hospital for the people that are staying there, working there and going to school there,” Keller says. When residents need groceries, there’s a neighborhood market or convenience store on almost every corner, and Save A Lot is on the east side near Northeast Market.
A mile south of Gay Street is a popular food district throughout the Washington Hill and Fells Point neighborhoods. Ministry of Brewing, located inside a towering, repurposed Gothic Revival church, provides visitors with craft ales and ornate architectural views. A block away, Angie's Seafood offers white tablecloth dining, and a block from there, Little Donna's serves homestyle dishes like tavern pie in a moody, yet cozy atmosphere. The Midwestern owner and chef, Robbie Tutlewski, began his successful restauranteur journey at Le Cordon Blue College of Culinary Arts in Chicago.
Stop by The Northeast Market for fresh produce, baked goods, meats, and seafoods.
Church Square Shopping Center offers locals a close and quick option for daily essentials.

Johns Hopkins Medical campus and historic St. Francis Xavier
In addition to the Johns Hopkins Medical campus being a major employer in the area, thousands of students also attend Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. These employees and students can take advantage of the Johns Hopkins Metro line, beginning at the hospital. On the north side of Gay Street, St. Francis Xavier Church is the oldest Roman Catholic establishment on the east side of Maryland, and the building's original Gothic Revival stone exterior reflects its history. Today, St. Francis Xavier is a Black Catholic parish, said to be the first exclusively Black parish in America.
The Johns Hopkins Hospital & Medical Campus is close by and serves a big role for the community.

Fresh air at Madison Square Park
Locals can get moving outside with a stroll through Madison Square Park, a green escape within this city suburb. The park's open grassy area provides room for pickup baseball or soccer games, and a playground and basketball court are nearby. Just south of Madison Square Park, Eden and Eager Park is a pocket of public space that includes a full-court basketball court and a couple of picnic tables. Gay Street is also located between two larger city parks: Clifton Park to the north, complete with a golf course and tennis courts, and Patterson Park to the south, with an observatory, dog park, outdoor pool and recreation center.
The multi purpose field at Madison Square Park is a great place for recreational activities.

Maryland's Principal of the Year at Dunbar High
Students in Gay Street can begin at Johnston Square Elementary before advancing to a 13-1 student-teacher ratio at Booker T. Washington Middle, both of which receive a C-minus grade from Niche. Paul Laurence Dunbar High School, graded a C by Niche, is ranked the No. 2 best high school for athletes in Maryland. Yetunde Reeves of Dunbar High was named the 2024-2025 Maryland Principal of the Year by the Maryland Association of Secondary School Principals, which recognizes high school leaders for their extraordinary commitment and influence on the profession.

Three-story brick townhomes line Gay Street
Sidewalks line the wide residential roads of Gay Street, where colorful brick townhomes and rowhouses sit tightly together. Three-story – sometimes even four-story – properties, some with fenced-in front lawns or back patios and fully renovated interiors, can cost between $200,000 and $400,000. A few older townhomes in need of a makeover might sell for around $70,000, and there are also units in apartment complexes for about $100,000. “The further north you go from the hospital, the more renters there are,” says Keller. “And closer to the hospital where people might work, there are more owners.”
Two and three story rowhomes are a classic form of housing found in the Gay Street neighborhood.

Access to I-83 and the MTA bus
Residents have convenient access to Interstate 83 a few blocks to the west, and the MTA bus system services the area. For farther travel, Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Airport is about 10 miles south of Gay Street.
Due to the recent Francis Scott Key Bridge destruction – which was a major part of the Baltimore Beltway – travel and commutes for residents will be severely affected for the next couple of years. “It’s going to be terrible for those who work around Dundalk, Glen Burnie and the surrounding areas,” Keller says. “There’s no telling how much longer people’s commutes will be, but easily another hour. And areas that aren’t used to the traffic are going to become much more congested as people find other routes.”
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
