Quiet residential streets filled mostly with retirees
About 5 miles north of downtown Baltimore, the neighborhood of Hillen consists of 17 organized streets. It takes its name from Hillen Road, sitting as the east border of the neighborhood. “It’s a very nice, quiet community,” says Keith Beatty, president of the Hillen Road Improvement Association. “Most neighbors have raised their families here and now it’s a bunch of retirees.” Morgan State University (MSU) sits across Hillen Road, and the community will sometimes partner with the university for events. “There’s not a whole lot of children, but it is a pet-friendly neighborhood,” says Beatty. “There are quite a few pet owners.” While residents may not be heading south into downtown Baltimore too often, they do sit on their porches saying hello to walkers through the neighborhood.
Baltimore rowhomes with maintained yards
Hillen homes often sit closer to the road, and while this area doesn't feature too many trees, the design does ensure that homes are plotted away from the curb, featuring short sidewalks or stairways leading up to each entrance. This allows for each homeowner to have a small front yard and the occasional small stoop, which many residents adorn with decorative awnings and flowering plants. “There’s pride in the neighborhood,” says Beatty. “There are well-maintained gardens and yards.” For homes in need of renovations, expect prices to begin around $75,000 and reach $130,000, while a home without the need for renovations begins around $150,000 and reaches $290,000. The neighborhood has a few one-way streets, and cars can be found lined along all streets.
Each block in Hillen seems to have it's own style such as this peaked roof on one of its homes.
Hillen homes are set back from and usually above the street.
Rowhomes don't need to be small and cramped and this three bedroom house proves.

Commercial shopping within the neighborhood
The renovated Northwood Commons sits in the southern portion of the neighborhood. Here, LIDL, southern-cuisine Georgia Peach and Tropical Smoothie Cafe share the area with retail stores like DTLR, a clothing store, and Beauty Plus Northwood. Across Loch Raven Boulevard, the Coldspring Shopping Center has Orient Express Food and Baltimore’s Best Wings alongside a Family Dollar store.

National Aquarium in downtown Baltimore
Hillen is bordered by Hillen Road and Loch Raven Boulevard to the east and west respectively. These roads head into downtown Baltimore where dolphins swim in the National Aquarium and the stars and planets can be viewed from the Maryland Science Center’s planetarium. “There’s a very active neighborhood association,” says Beatty. “We work closely with MSU and have public safety days, a financial fair. We want to help our members improve.”
Student governments and construction courses
Students can begin school at Walter P. Carter Elementary/Middle School (WPC) for kindergarten through eighth grade. At WPC, students can participate in clubs and activities such as robotics, academic tutoring and student government. Mergenthaler Vocational-Technical High School (Mervo) has a student-teacher ratio of 17-to-1 and offers programs such as construction, consumer services, and information technology to students. Both WPC and Mervo receive a C-minus from Niche.

Walks around the lake
“We’re within walking distance of Lake Montebello,” says Beatty. “People run or walk around the lake.” Lake Montebello is a man-made reservoir that has a 1.3 mile path around it. Herring Run Park extends the greenspace, with 375 acres stretching between MSU and Interstate 895.
Hillen residents can easily hop one of the many public buses from Morgan University's campus.
Buses and street parking
The neighborhood has three buses that follow the bordering roads, two on Loch Raven Boulevard and one on Hillen Road. “There’s a lot of student parking on Hillen Road,” says Beatty. “We’re aware of it, but it’s not disruptive.” Hillen Road connects up with Hartford Road which in turn is a straight shot to the harbor and downtown Baltimore.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
