It might be a small neighborhood in North Baltimore, but Keswick’s got a big heart. Dating back to 1883, Keswick was the original site of The Home for Incurables of Baltimore City, a philanthropic senior care facility, one of the first of its kind. While today the organization’s location and name have shifted, the nearby Keswick Multi-Care Center continues its mission to provide quality and dignified care to the members of its community. For homebuyers looking to live within a reasonable distance to work but outside all of the hubbub of central Baltimore, Keswick may be worth a look. “If you are a professional and you want to be in a neighborhood of professionals that want to live in a quiet neighborhood, it would be desirable,” says Sterling France, owner of Fran-Coa Real Estate & Management, LLC, a 40-year real estate veteran and longtime Baltimore resident. “It has very nice restaurants, plenty of shopping within walking distance, and it’s close to Interstate-83, Jones-Fall Expressway.”

Cold Spring, quiet neighborhood
Located south of West Cold Spring Lane and nestled at the center of Evergreen, Hampden, Hoes Heights and Tuscany-Canterbury, the neighborhood of Keswick is a quiet reprieve from nearby city life. “It’s a quiet neighborhood with not a lot of traffic,” France says. Prospective buyers can choose from a variety of charming single-family homes or Tudor-style townhomes carefully set back along tree-lined streets. Offering similar amenities to that of neighboring Roland Park—mature trees, lush landscaping, and quaint architecture—Keswick homes tend to come with a lower price tag. The bulk of homes sell from $450,000 to around $675,000. However, homes often sell here from as low as $225,000 to upwards of $1.13 million.
Don't miss Miss Shirley
Multiple shopping and dining options exist for Keswick neighbors. A quick walk down to Cold Spring Lane and residents will find themselves immersed in local commerce. Grab brunch at Miss Shirley’s Café, Maryland’s favorite restaurant, and be sure to try their award-winning pancakes or fried green tomatoes. For groceries, head over to Giant Food in nearby Hampden. Or for gas and on-the-go needs, the local Royal Farms is nearly always open.
Picture perfect landscapes and learning
For the philosophically minded, spend some time exploring the nearby campuses of Loyola University and Notre Dame of Maryland University. Home to 5,238 students and 1073 students respectively, both schools offer picturesque landscapes, unique architecture, and undergraduate and graduate level programs. Offering many free cultural, arts and educational events throughout the year, locals can continue learning in their very own backyards.

Roland Park - Dunbar
Keswick students are zoned to attend Baltimore City Public Schools. They may attend Roland Park Elementary/Middle School from pre-kindergarten through 8th grade. Niche grades the school B. From 9th through 12th grade, they could go on to Paul Lawrence Dunbar Community High School, which Niche rates C.
Sherwood makes merry
For nature enthusiasts, outdoor activities are just outside the neighborhood in nearby Stony Run Park, which is a perfect spot for an afternoon walk or jog. Or residents can take a trip over to nearby Sherwood Gardens to enjoy six acres of gardens. This privately owned park is free and open to the public year-round. Featuring dogwoods, flowering cherries, wisteria, magnolias, and azaleas, the garden is most renowned for its annual tulip display. Be sure to visit at least once in early April or May to catch the 80,000 tulips in bloom.

A Cold Spring in your step
Just about a half mile from Interstate 83, Keswick residents have good highway and surface road options. Traffic, however, can get heavy periodically. “On the main thoroughfare through there, West Cold Spring Lane, it’s busy because it carries traffic from East Baltimore to West Baltimore,” France says. Buses operate along Cold Spring and Roland for those seeking public transportation alternatives.
