A close-knit community north of downtown Baltimore

Though there is no lake in Lake Walker, this close-knit community isn’t far from downtown Baltimore. With an active community association and modest-sized homes, it’s got the best of both worlds with city and suburb vibes. “Lake Walker has the benefits of being very close to shops and restaurants but also close to Northern Parkway, which will get you to the freeway in 5 to 10 minutes. It’s a charming neighborhood, but it is small. It has all the amenities of Cedarcroft and access to the shops and restaurants on York Road,” says Azam Khan, a long-time resident of Baltimore and Realtor with Long and Foster who has been selling in the area for about 24 years. The average home price here is about $275,000, which is higher than Chinquapin Park but lower than Cedarcroft and Lake Evesham to the west. The neighborhood has an active community association, and students study within the Baltimore City Public Schools system, which is graded an overall C-plus on Niche.

Indoor restaurants and boutiques at Belvedere Square Market

With direct access to the York Road Plaza shopping center about 1 mile away, locals can get all their needs met at big box stores like Giant Food, Rite Aid and Walgreens. For something more unique, Belvedere Square Market has many restaurants and boutiques inside, such as Atwater’s coffee and ice cream, EJJI Ramen and Mason’s Famous Lobster Rolls. “Anybody living in Lake Walker would go over to Belvedere Market. It’s very pleasant,” Khan says. “I would call it a grown-ups food court in that it’s got a wine store. The restaurants are kind of open to everyone, and you sit in the central area to have Asian food, wine and cheese or soups and salads. It’s very charming.” Neopol’s is a must for smoked meats, seafood, and cheese pies. The Seasoned Olive gourmet grocery store in the market has upscale pantry items, gifts and treats. “You’ve also got some old standards like Swallow at the Hollow and Zen West,” Khan says. “Right next to them is The Senator Theater, which is a great old-fashioned theater where John Waters would premiere his movies.” The Senator Theatre across the street on York Road was built in the 1930s and still maintains many of its original features and architecture.

Commutes to downtown Baltimore and Towson to the north

Lake Walker is a direct drive down York Road to downtown Baltimore, but traffic on that route can take almost 10 minutes longer. “It's not far to downtown, and it’s very close to Towson, which is just a couple of miles up York Road. It’s very convenient for those who want to work in the Towson Area or the downtown area,” Khan says. Drivers can choose to hop on the East Northern Parkway and then Interstate 83 to get downtown. They can also drive a bit further via Route 295 to reach the Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport, which is about 19 miles south of Lake Walker. The CityLink Red (RD) bus route will take residents all the way south from York Road to downtown, for those who would prefer not to drive. For emergencies or checkups, the Johns Hopkins Hospital and University of Maryland Medical Center are both about 7 miles south via York Road, and 10 miles south via I-83.
