Suburban Neighborhood in Baltimore, Maryland
Baltimore City 21227, 21230
The community of Lakeland in Southwest Baltimore was once known by a different name. Dubbed “Minersville” in the early 1800s due to the area’s many iron ore pits, the first homes here housed miners, or employees of the Baltimore Iron Works company. Later, as the need for this industry faded, the abandoned ore pits filled with water forming small lakes, and the community’s name became Lakeland. Today, Lakeland is a diverse mixed-use community featuring manufacturing and warehouse spaces as well as a residential population complete with cozy housing options.
Housing options in Lakeland consist primarily of traditional Baltimore row houses, as well as a mix of Arts and Craftsman influenced detached single-family homes. Prospective buyers can choose from minimalist cottages and ranch-styles or opt for the larger American Four-Square or Dutch Colonial designs. This community also offers some duplex, or semi-detached options. Many of the single-family homes in Lakeland are painted in bright shades of blue, orange, green and pink, and feature unique details like expansive roofed front porches. The most popular form of row houses here are two-storied red brick homes featuring flat facades and short front stoops. The average sales price here is $135,000, price points vary depending on the age, size and condition of the property.
Students here attend Baltimore City Public Schools like Lakeland Elementary/Middle School, and the Paul Laurence Dunbar High School. Serving over 1000 students in ninth through twelfth grades, Paul Laurence Dunbar, or P-TECH is a specialized STEM school offering four-to-six-year programs in which students can plan to earn a high school diploma and/or a no-cost associate degree. At Dunbar, students receive first-in-line status for job placement, via partnerships with local organizations like Johns Hopkins University, the University of Maryland, and Kaiser Permanente.
For all your daily essentials, the main thoroughfare of West Patapsco Avenue offers a variety of casual eateries and commercial retail options to meet your needs. Residents can pick up their weeks’ worth of groceries at the LA Mart International Food Market, or the nearby Megamart supermarket. For quick bites, there’s Pizza Pleasers, Popeyes and a Sonic Drive-In. Or for plenty of fun finds, head over to the longstanding Patapsco Flea Market and search for your very own hidden treasure.
For some open green spaces, local Lakeland Park offers residents walking paths, basketball courts, a baseball field, and a swing set too. Or if you’re looking for a bigger park to explore, remember you’re only a short ten minutes’ drive away from Patapsco Valley State Park, which features over 16,000 acres and five distinct recreational areas along the banks of the Patapsco River.
Another perk of living in Lakeland? You’re connected! Situated just north of I-295 and in direct proximity to the Light Rail, the MARC train and the BWI Airport, residents of Lakeland can get where they need to be, fast. Hop on the Light Rail and head into the city for an O’s game. Commute via the MARC train to nearby Washington DC. Or simply stay local and enjoy the Inner Harbor waterfront promenade.
