Historic architecture and an artsy vibe

Smack in the middle of Baltimore, Mid-Town Belvedere residents have easy access to seemingly endless amenities just blocks from home. Within a single mile, residents can walk to the Meyerhoff for a performance by the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, catch a show at The Lyric, explore a museum and follow their noses to local cafes and restaurants, where local musicians are often hired during the summer to fill the street with music. According to Kenneth Hobbs, an associate broker at ExecuHome Realty who lived in the area for 17 years and has been selling homes here since 2001, people are drawn to the neighborhood for its arts, culture and dining scenes. “It’s my favorite neighborhood out of the city,” Hobbs says. “It has some of the best architectural examples in the city, which gives it its most urban vibe. There’s always music, too, events in the park. I love the historic nature of it, the history behind it, and I love the diversity; it’s really a little bit of everybody.” Julie Canard, a Realtor at Long & Foster Real Estate who has lived in the area for 18 years and has 45 years of experience selling homes, also fell in love with the area’s history — and the people who live there. “We have a really tight-knit group of people here that everybody looks out for each other,” Canard says, adding that there’s a group known as the Mount Vernon-Belvedere Association. “We have a lot of dinner parties, and it’s just a really fun place to live. … I wouldn’t leave here. I love it so much.”

Cafés, bars and restaurants with unique atmospheres

Belvedere’s artsy vibe and stunning architecture work together to give its many local cafés, restaurants and bars unique vibes. A clear example of this is the neighborhood’s namesake, The Belvedere Hotel. Built in 1903, the elegant Beaux Arts-style building now serves as a multi-use space, offering commercial and retail spaces, residences and entertainment options. The Owl Bar is a Prohibition-Era-style pub located on the first floor where stained glass windows frame an animatronic owl behind the bar. A few blocks over, Brewer’s Art provides a candle-lit basement vibe and Belgian-style brews. Locals recommend the Resurrection — their abbey brown ale — and the skillet mac and cheese. Spirits of Mt. Vernon is known for frequent events and live music. “It’s owned by two local gals,” Hobbs says. “That’s kind of a gathering spot for the whole neighborhood.” Just next door, Marie Louise Bistro is popular for brunch and has musicians on the street during the summer. Mid-Town Belvedere offers abundant mini-marts and convenience stores for daily needs. Save A Lot and Safeway are less than a mile from the center of the neighborhood, the historic Lexington Market is in Mount Vernon and Whole Foods is down in Fells Point.

Historic rowhouses and condos

Condominiums and rowhouses make up almost the entirety of the housing market in this urban neighborhood. Rowhouses vary from simple brick buildings to traditional brownstones or stone buildings with bay windows and Queen Anne-style rowhouses. Depending on the square footage, a historic rowhouse with eight bedrooms can go for anywhere between $1.3 million and $2.85 million. Smaller historic rowhouses with just four bedrooms are harder to find and can sell for around $650,000 or $700,000. Some rowhouses are converted into condominiums, but there are also large Beau Arts buildings full of condos. Condos can sell for anywhere between $90,000 to $450,000. There’s also one co-op just across the border in Mount Vernon, which has units from $160,000 to $800,000. “I personally live in a Beau Arts building that was built in 1906,” Canard says. “It was built after the Great Baltimore Fire, and it’s magnificent. It’s reminiscent of something from Paris and it’s right on the square. It has all the original details in the apartments. Mahogany, some of which has been painted over with white paint, but it’s a magnificent building and it looks out onto the north park.” The CAP Index crime score is 7 out of 10, compared to the national average of 4.

Live music in Pearlstone Park, historic monuments and museums

Pearlstone Park is one of a few small green spaces in the neighborhood that are often used for musical performances and festivals. A few blocks south, Mt. Vernon Children’s Park offers a playground where children can climb and run out their extra energy, complete with a sprayground where they can cool off during the summer. Just a few blocks south of Mid-Town Belvedere, the original Washington Monument is surrounded by little pocket parks in every cardinal direction. According to Canard, The Mount Vernon Place Conservancy is currently raising money to restore these parks to the way Frederick Law Olmstead, the designer of New York City’s Central Park, designed them. Historic monuments and museums in historic buildings are also scattered throughout Mid-Town Belvedere and nearby Mount Vernon, and each is a point of pride for residents like Canard. The Enoch Pratt Free Library is a grand Romanesque Revival building that took two years to build. Construction finished in 1933, and the library is now home to hundreds of thousands of books. The Baltimore Basilica is the first Cathedral built in the United States; workers started building it in 1806, and it wasn’t completed until 1821. Mid-Town Belvedere residents can also go see the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra play right in their neighborhood, and The Walters Art Gallery, which Canard calls “one of the most notable art galleries in the world,” is just blocks away. Sports fans don’t have to go far for entertainment, either. Oriole Park at Camden Yards hosts Major League Baseball games and the M&T Bank Stadium is home to the Baltimore Ravens football team. Both stadiums are about 2 miles away, a trip that takes just a few minutes on the Light Rail. According to Canard, private clubs are another source of fun and socialization in Mid-Town Belvedere. “We have the Engineers Club, Mount Vernon Club, which is a woman’s club, and then the Maryland Club,” she says.

Celebrating the arts at Artscape, Monument Lighting

Come summertime, locals have the best seat in the house for all the area's local events and festivities, like Artscape. Featuring local artisans, live music performances, interactive arts and crafts exhibits, food, drink and general merriment, this free event attracts more than 350,000 people every year. It’s not the only big event, either. “They have the Monument Lighting, which used to be a small community thing where they would light up the Washington Monument and they would string lights around it and make it look like a Christmas tree,” Hobbs says. Today, the event draws the entire city and features caroling, food and fireworks. According to Canard, The Flower Mart is another popular event. Flowers, of course, are everywhere, but there are also local vendors, food and drinks — including a unique treat she calls a lemon stick. “It’s unique to Mount Vernon,” Canard says. “So you have a lemon and you stick a piece of peppermint in it, and you suck the juice out through the peppermint.”
