Neighborhood in Baltimore, Maryland
Baltimore City 21223
If you’ve ever shuffled a deck of cards, then you’ll understand this neighborhood’s claim to fame. Mill Hill, a small community in Southwest Baltimore is home to the city’s longest block of row homes—1800 feet long to be exact—and it’s known as the “Mill Hill Deck of Cards.” Built in 1912 by developer Walter L. Westphaul, the 2600 block of Wilkens Avenue (and the row homes that line it) were designed for employees of nearby breweries and businesses. Originally sold for less than $1300 each, today homes in Mill Hill can sell for anywhere between $75,000 to $120,000, depending on the condition of the property.
Bisected into two sections by Wilkens Avenue, the southern half of Mill Hill features some row houses, but is primarily industrial. The majority of the land is occupied by Simms Metal, a BGE Substation and several export and trucking businesses. North of Wilkens Avenue, Mill Hill is almost exclusively residential and this is where you’ll find the “Deck of Cards,” as well as additional housing options. The historic homes of Mill Hill will be recognizable by their location, but also because of their Italianate and Renaissance Revival architectural designs, marble stoops and ornamental balls that top the cornices of each home. In addition to these row house styles, prospective buyers can also choose from Daylight-styles, with front porches designed to allow sunlight in; or opt for early Colonial Revival-influenced styles.
Students here attend Baltimore City Public Schools, like Frederick Elementary, Katherine Johnson Global Academy (middle) and the Vivien T. Thomas Academy. Vivien T. Thomas Medical Arts Academy. Serving over 400 students in ninth through twelfth grades, the Vivien T. Thomas Academy supports career pathways in the medical sciences ranging from emergency medicine to nursing and dental assistantships.
For all your daily essentials, the Westside Shopping Center features a Food Depot supermarket, a Dollar General and a Dollar Tree, an assortment of casual eateries and a variety of retailers to choose from.
For some time outdoors, the neighborhood pocket park, Catherine Street Park, features a playground, open fields and basketball courts. Neighboring Carroll Park is another great option. Known as Baltimore City’s third oldest park, this 20-acre space includes athletic fields, a playground, a natural play space, a skate park, and a nine-hole golf course. Also connecting with the Gwynns Falls Trail, residents can always take a detour and hike bike or walk a portion of this 15-mile urban greenway.
Or for a change of pace, remember Mill Hill is only 10-minutes from Downtown Baltimore, the Inner Harbor and the waterfront promenade. Catch an O’s game, cheer the Ravens toward another touch down or simply enjoy the harbor views.
This is Mill Hill, a neighborhood in Southwest Baltimore that could be your winning hand.
