A primarily residential neighborhood of rowhouses
Sandwiched between Interstate 70 and the Baltimore National Pike lies West Hills, a small neighborhood of rowhouses, brushing up against Gwynn Falls/Leakin Park. In the midst of West Baltimore’s hilly terrain, West Hills emerged circa 1952, and a close community has since developed and grown here. “People know one another and neighbors care about each other,” says Mary Foreman, longtime Baltimore resident and Realtor with Berkshire Hathaway PenFed Realty. “In West Hills, most people enter their homes from the back, and that’s where people create community: through their backyards.” From porch gatherings to backyard barbecues, the biggest draw to West Hills is its welcoming atmosphere, accompanied by easy park access.

Maintaining front lawns in West Hills
When conjuring an image of a signature Baltimore rowhouse, it's the two-story, red brick builds of West Hills that come to mind. Many feature decorative metal awnings over doors and small front porches, along with protruding bay windows. Home prices most often fall between $175,000 and about $275,000, with about 37% of residents opting to rent instead of own. “One of the things that makes West Hills unique and special is that people are very, very proud of their front yards, porches and gardens,” Foreman says. A drive along any block in West Hills features views of well-kept lawns, complete with decorative garden stones, flowering plants, trees and bushes. Typically, one side of the street sits atop a hill, with one or two flights of stairs leading to the front door, while the other side remains flat. Many properties have driveways, accessible by the back alleyways, but street parking is also common.
Primarily made up of traditional Baltimore rowhouses, you can find local team spirit everywhere.

Recreation at Gwynn Falls/Leakin and West Hills parks
With Gwynn Falls/Leakin Park’s more than 1,000 acres right next door, West Hills residents can hike and explore miles of trails. The historic Italianate-style Orianda Mansion is a popular spectacle in the park that hosts art shows and puts up holiday decorations. Kids can learn about animals and explore the exhibits at the Carrie Murray Nature Center, and families can nurture a plot at the Leakin Park City Farm community garden. The West Hills Park also sits off St. Gemma Road, with a playground, open fields and a multiuse court with four basketball hoops.
