Centralized amenities and attractions in the heart of Bangor
Downtown Bangor rests alongside the Penobscot River and is seen by many as the heart of the city. Near the rows of multistory, Federal-style brick government and office buildings are popular restaurants, as well as a few museums and local shops. A system of greenways and sidewalks connects the amenities, making it one of the more walkable areas in Bangor. “It's really nice because there are so many stores close to each other, so you can keep hopping from store to store,” says Lacy Haggerty, the property manager of Bangor House Apartments, who has lived in Bangor for over two years.

Local chains and Bangor shopping options
The roads of Downtown Bangor are lined with a number of dining and shopping options for residents. One popular spot close to the core of downtown is the Portland Pie Company, a local pizza chain that started in Portland in 1997. Locals can also head to Harvest Moon Deli, which has been repeatedly voted the best sandwich shop by Bangor Metro since its opening in 2007. The deli is known for its fun sandwich names like "bacon care of business" and "limp brisket". For classic pub fare, residents can head south to Geaghan's Pub & Craft Brewery, known for its house-crafted beers and fish chowder. Residents can shop for groceries at the Shaw’s on Main Street or pick up farm-fresh ingredients at the Bangor Farmers Market every Sunday from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Major Bangor roads and bustling walkways
Main Street and Hammond Street are the main thoroughfares for the community, intersecting with the Kenduskeag Stream and creating a scenic heart to downtown. These roads also provide quick access to larger roads like Interstate 95 to the north and Interstate 395 to the south. The neighborhood is also quite walkable, with sidewalks on every street, which Haggerty says helps the massive amount of foot traffic. Walkers can also choose from a number of linear parks and trails that run throughout the area to diversify the views. For public transportation, the city offers the Community Connector bus lines for farther trips to places like the Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center, which is less than 2 miles to the east along U.S. Route 2. The Bangor International Airport is 3 miles north of the neighborhood.

Penobscot River views and leafy landscaping
Residents who live in Downtown Bangor can choose between a number of waterfront walkways to enjoy the outdoors. Closer to the heart of the city is the Norumbega Parkway, which is covered with shaded paths, sculptures and benches to relax on. A little farther south, there is also the Bangor Waterfront, also known as the Penobscot River Walkway, with picnic tables and scenic views of the waterfront. “It’s just beautiful there; I used to walk there on my lunches,” Haggerty says. Davenport Park offers a quiet space with well-manicured greenery and a gentle sloping hill just to the east of the river that features a memorial to the USS Maine, which sank in Havana Harbor in 1898 during the Spanish-American War. “It’s a big lawn where you see a lot of people having a picnic and watch all the foot traffic go by,” Haggerty says.

Bangor museums and events
For daily recreation, residents in and around Downtown Bangor are less than a mile away from museums like the Zillman Art Museum, which is the only modern and contemporary art museum north of Portland, and the Maine Discovery Museum, which offers hands-on interactive exhibits for kids and families. Visitors can learn about a wide range of subjects, from nature trails and reptile rooms, to a kid’s sized doctor’s office and dinosaur digs. “My daughter just loves it there,” Haggerty says. “There is a little kitchen there, which is always a mess, which shows just how often it is used and how much kids like to play there.” Residents are also within walking distance of annual downtown events, the largest of which is the Bangor State Fair. A tradition since 1849, the fair is one of the oldest in the country. It occurs over two weekends in August and is jam-packed with events and activities, including carnival rides, demolition derbies and tractor pulls. Downtown is also home to the Maine Savings Amphitheater and Cross Insurance Center, two popular event spaces with year-round events such as monster truck rallies and concerts.
