Affordable homes and established schools just north of downtown

Just northeast of downtown Bangor, the Tree Streets neighborhood has become well known for its affordable homes located near highly rated local schools and parks. Homebuyers can choose from various historic homes among the quiet residential streets within walking distance of downtown Bangor and all of the dining and shopping options there. “The combination of community, schools and affordability is what people looking around Bangor tend to find really attractive about the area,” says Aimi Baldwin, an associate broker with ERA Dawson-Bradford Co., who is also a resident of the neighborhood. “Once the Fruit Street School became a Blue Ribbon School, it became a primary target neighborhood for them.”

Historic Colonial and Victorian homes

Nearly all the homes in Tree Streets were built between 1850 and 1910, and many are Colonial Revival or New Englander inspired with some ranch style and Cape Cod homes sprinkled throughout. These residences are a mix of single-family homes and renovated multi-unit dwellings. Houses often take up most of the lot size, offering quick access to the streets and the trees that shade the sidewalks. “There are plum trees on many streets, and you can pick them as you walk by,” Baldwin says. Smaller homes with less than 2,000 square feet of space cost between $100,000 and $300,000, and larger homes with more room can range between $300,000 and $550,000.

Blue ribbons schools and athletics champions

Students in kindergarten through third grade can attend Fruit Street School, which receives an A-minus rating from Niche and is a Blue Ribbon School. They can then head to the Mary Snow School for grades four and five, which receives a B-plus rating on Niche, before continuing to the William S. Cohen School, which also scores an A-minus rating. The final stop for many students is the B-plus-rated Bangor High School, which has winning sports teams and has earned more than 100 state athletic championships since its inception in 1835.

Halloween in Tree Streets

Halloween is by far the biggest event here, where “you do big, or you go home when it comes to decorating,” Baldwin says. On the night itself, the community closes off part of Maple Street, one of the wider streets in the neighborhood, as the block fills with thousands of trick-or-treaters going to every house and collecting treats. “When my husband and I first moved into our house, we got three bags of candy, which seemed like a crazy amount, but we ran out of candy at 6 p.m. and had to go back to the store,” Baldwin says. Residents of Tree Streets are also a short trip from downtown events, the largest of which is the Bangor State Fair. The festivities have been a tradition since 1849, and it is one of the oldest fairs in the country. It occurs over two weekends in August and is jam-packed with activities, including carnival rides, demolition derbies and tractor pulls. Downtown is also home to the Maine Savings Amphitheater and Cross Insurance Center where shows and performances are held year-round.

Chapin Park and nearby Bangor greenspaces

Chapin Park sits in the middle of the Tree Streets neighborhood and takes up an entire block. The park offers a wide-open green space speckled with maple and cherry trees covering a series of walking paths and benches for residents to exercise or relax. The park also has a large play area for children of all ages to enjoy. The park is also home to a number of community events throughout the year, from the annual Chapin Park Community Party with live music and games to a neighborhood yard sale. Many other parks in Bangor “are within easy walking and biking distance for the kids,” Baldwin says, from the large track and field area at Cameron Stadium to the fitness park at Broadway Park and playset and Stillwater Park Playground.

Dining along State Street

Frank’s Bake Shop is just south of the neighborhood and offers a variety of freshly baked donuts, raspberry crumbles and tarts. “Everything raspberry is just amazing,” Baldwin said. “It's a good thing for my wallet that they are closed on Sundays.” Residents can also stop by No. 1 Chinese on State Street, which Baldwin says offers some of the best Chinese food in Bangor. Gambino’s Pizza also sits on State Street and has been serving pizza and sandwiches since 1972. Shoppers can head to the Bangor Mall area or the Broadway Shopping Center, both of which are less than 2 miles away, providing access to major stores like Hannaford, TJ Maxx, Walmart, and JCPenney.

Quiet suburban Bangor sidewalks and roads

U.S. Route 2, also known as State Road, runs along the neighborhood’s southern end, and Interstate 95 is less than a mile to the north, offering plenty of commuting options to those who don’t work downtown. Many of the roads in Tree Streets are also lined with sidewalks, and residents can often see neighbors out and about for strolls. However, due to the distance to certain shops and restaurants, “most people default to driving their car,” Baldwin says. Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center is less than a mile south of the neighborhood, and Bangor International Airport is 4 miles to the east.
