Small-town vibes in coastal Bristol County

Barrington’s Nayatt neighborhood displays close-knit, small-town vibes on the shores of upper Narragansett Bay. Realtor Tracy LeRoux of Link Real Estate, who has nearly three decades of local experience, says the picturesque coastal town offers “a serene and idyllic lifestyle.” Nayatt’s beachy location and proximity to natural amenities, such as the woodsy-waterfront Veterans Memorial Park hiking trails, make this part of town especially scenic. “Barrington is full of families with young kids. The sense of community draws them here, as do the private-level public schools, the amenities, the water,” says Rhode Island local Ellen Oaklund, a Realtor with Keller Williams Coastal.

Top-rated Barrington public schools

Neighborhood kids attend schools in the highly rated Barrington Public Schools system. Nayatt School and Hampden Meadows School serve youngsters between kindergarten and fifth grade. Older students attend Barrington Middle and Barrington High. All four schools earn A grades from Niche. Nayatt, Barrington Middle and Barrington High also all rank first on Niche’s lists of the best elementary, middle and high schools in the state. Barrington High offers experiential pathway concentrations in subjects ranging from arts and business to healthcare. During their last year, Barrington students must complete a Senior Project that involves a minimum of 20 hours of field work and a research paper on a topic of their choice. Civic-minded students can work with TapIn, a local organization that addresses East Bay area food insecurity. The 100% volunteer-run nonprofit has been active in Barrington for over 40 years.

Upscale bayside living

Nayatt’s wide streets are heavily shaded by established oak and maple trees. Large center-hall Colonials and Georgian Revivals, set back from the street by broad front lawns, tend to sell for between $800,000 and $2.5 million. Waterfront properties with private boat docks sit on the upper end of the price spectrum. Beachy Cape Cod cottages and one-story bungalows run anywhere from about $560,000 to $700,000. “Barrington is very beautiful, and extremely high-end,” says Oaklund, who has more than six years of experience in the local market. “Nayatt is especially high-end. It’s a second-home neighborhood for a lot of people. They like to be near the water for the boating and the views – it’s more of a yachting community than a ‘hey let’s go hang out at the beach and wear flip flops all day’ community.”

Upper Narragansett Bay waterfront recreation

Barrington Beach is a pebbly, swimmable beach on upper Narragansett Bay. It’s at the south end of Nayatt, within a mile and a half of most homes. Lifeguards are posted at the small waterfront between Memorial Day and Labor Day every summer. Barrington local Jean Bellm says the city’s water quality standards are so high, that it is tested twice weekly. “The state only requires testing once a week, but we double-test. It’s an example of our attention to detail,” she says. Bellm is the director of the Barrington Peck Center for Adult Enrichment, the town recreation center just 2 miles north of Nayatt. The Peck Center hosts community events throughout the year, from the annual Family Beach Campout in September to the annual tree lighting ceremony in December. In June, the annual Arts Festival & Community Fair showcases local artists and businesses with vendors and live music. The Best Ball Golf Tournament, another annual town event, opens the Rhode Island Country Club to the public for a community golf competition. The private country club is on Nayatt’s west side, and its 18-hole Donald Ross course overlooks the bay. LeRoux says the RICC’s lengthy list of amenities makes it a “social hub for the community” even beyond golf enthusiasts.

Barrington's town center offers retail and restaurants

Barrington’s town center, home to the Town Hall and the public library, teems with retailers and restaurants. Barrington Shopping Center, less than 3 miles north of Nayatt, has a Shaw’s grocery store and other national chains. It’s also home to locally owned shops such as Barrington Books, which sells new-release books, games, gifts, and home goods. Blue Kangaroo Café is a deli and bakery with dine-in and takeout service. Black Pear is known for its freshly brewed coffees and baked goods. The dimly lit, cozy Oxford Tavern serves global-inspired pub fare around the corner, while nearby Viola Cucina is a local favorite for classic Italian.

Car-dependent, but bikeable south Barrington

As a town, Barrington is largely car-dependent, but the Rhode Island Public Transit Authority provides fixed-route bus service from stops on Rhode Island Highway 114. The main road connects north toward East Providence and south toward Bristol. Providence, a regional employment hub, is about 11 miles north, a drive that can take as little as 30 minutes with no traffic. Barrington Town Hall, surrounded by Barrington’s central business district, is less than 3 miles north of Nayatt. It’s about an 8-minute drive via Nayatt Road to Rumstick Road, with no traffic. Most main roads have bike lanes; local elementary schools offer instruction on how to be a safe cyclist, part of an effort to increase biking in Barrington.
