Revitalization is a word you hear a lot when researching potential places to live. It can mean a variety of things since revitalization is a process that can sometimes take years. In the case of Baton Rouge’s Mid City South neighborhood, the term refers to a diverse and lively community split into sections of residences punctuated by commercial sections where new businesses are springing up seemingly overnight. In addition to the shopping at the Towne Center at Cedar Lodge, there are numerous restaurants, bars and grills along with some of the city’s best Creole cuisine. The neighborhood continues to grow with new housing construction and, due to its proximity to downtown, is attracting those wanting a short commute while making their dollars stretch a bit further.

Architecturally speaking, Mid City South is a grab bag of various styles. From cottages and Arts and Crafts bungalows to modern townhouses and condos, dwellings run the gamut of price points as well. A one-bedroom, one-bath condo starts at $75,000 while a traditional Southern Colonial home with four bedrooms and five baths can cost as much as $1 million. Of course, since this is South Louisiana, you’ll find plenty of French Country and Acadian-style homes as well.

Students in the area have their choice of private, parochial and public schools in Mid City South. Lasalle Elementary focuses on science and math while offering before and after care for its students along with an accelerated reading program. Capitol Middle Magnet creates a project-oriented environment where students can earn high school credits for algebra, computer science and foreign languages. The interactive and collaborative system also offers courses in marketing, animation and STEM. Mckinley Senior High specializes in the arts with programs focused on music, dance and visual arts. It’s been serving the community since the early 1900s and today has over a dozen sports teams and 23 AP courses.

One of the major attractions of Mid City South is its green spaces, and one of the largest in Baton Rouge is located here. Independence Community Park spans nearly 100 acres and contains everything from a theatre to botanical gardens. Of course, there’s all the things you’d expect in a park too. A playground, rec center, and outdoor fitness station mingle with soccer and ball fields, a swimming pool and tennis courts. The entire park is surrounded by lines of American flags which blend beautifully with the space’s many gardens and trees.

Mid City South also contains some of Baton Rouge’s most iconic restaurants. Dearman’s began in 1959 as a pharmacy and lunch counter. Over time it evolved into a diner-like establishment where you can still see your meal being prepared just over the counter. Famous for its burgers, the eatery serves up hot plates, salads and shakes too. In fact, the place’s root beer float just might rival the burger for most ordered menu item.

Drusilla Seafood Restaurant has been making authentic Louisiana cuisine for over 40 years. The family-owned establishment specializes in fried, boiled and blackened seafood dishes which can be enjoyed in private dining rooms of various sizes. If you stop in, try the charbroiled oysters or crabmeat au gratin before moving on to seafood platters or pasta.

In a rapidly growing town like Baton Rouge, Mid City South lets residents enjoy a developing cultural hotspot with easy access to major roadways and plentiful housing options.
