Don't be fooled by its name, there are no beaches in Beachwood. In fact, it's quite a distance away from Lake Erie, the closest waterfront. Beachwood is named after the beech trees that once blanketed the area. As the story goes, when Beachwood was still a village, a hall clerk misspelled its name on some official documents, and it has been Beachwood with an "A" ever since. Susie Loparo, a 26-year Realtor with RE/MAX Traditions, says, “Beachwood’s schools are excellent, the amenities are great, the town has a really nice pool. The city is building a $3.5 million dollar playground and a new library. It’s also very close to a few major hospitals."

Cleveland-area planned suburbs
For many years, Beachwood was characterized by midcentury bungalow homes. Time has changed things, but some of these bungalows are still available on the hilly, well-shaded roads going to the neighboring suburb of Shaker Heights, where they sit behind well-manicured front lawns. Many of these houses have been replaced elsewhere in the city by multi-generational homes in ranch, split level and colonial styles resting beside trees and grid-patterned streets. Beachwood has a competitive housing market with single-family homes ranging from $225,000 to $875,000, varying by square footage and lot size. Residents benefit from a lower tax rate in the city, as Loparo says, “There are lower taxes in Beachwood now because it was designed as a planned community years ago.”
