About Beavercreek, OH

Farmland turned retail destination near Wright Patterson Air Force Base

Beavercreek has come a long way since its founding in the early 1800s. Once full of farmland and humble manufacturing plants, the city has grown into a community of over 47,000 against a backdrop of full, verdant foliage. The city's economy thrives on its commercial centers and healthcare facilities. Soin Medical Center and Kettering Urgent Care are among some of the city's top employers. Another major employer is Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, which annually draws hundreds of active duty and civilian personnel to the city. "We have a lot of contractors living here that support Wright-Patt," says Katy Carrico, the city's communications director. "There are so many contract and development companies in our area that I'm not even familiar with all of them." Residents have an array of newer homes and high-ranking schools to choose from, and bustling shopping hubs sit close to several major thoroughfares.

Miami Valley's major malls

Beavercreek boasts a thriving commercial scene. The city has two major malls, both shopping destinations for the whole Miami Valley. The Mall at Fairfield Commons has over 100 stores, while The Greene offers an al fresco shopping experience. Smaller commercial hubs surround major roads, like the North Fairfield and Dayton Xenia intersection. Banners commemorating local veterans welcome people to the intersection, tying back to the community's civic pride and culture. Outside the city, the National Museum of the United States Air Force is one of Beavercreek's biggest attractions. The museum, which recently celebrated its 101st anniversary, showcases thousands of military artifacts, including full-size airplanes and missiles.

Newer homes in every style

Most homes are newer, as residential growth in the city only started around 1980. With a wide variety of styles and new developments, the city's real estate refuses to be boxed in. "No matter what you're looking for, you can find it in Beavercreek. If you want a ranch-style, a condo or a large, two-story home with five bedrooms, it'll be here," says Julie Suitts, a Realtor with Keller Williams. "If you want a little area where you'll know all your neighbors, you can find that. If you want to spread out on some acreage by yourself, you can find that too." The median home price is around $315,000, below the national median of $407,000.

North Fairfield and Dayton Xenia roads are growing wider

Inside the city is the crossroads of Interstate 675 and Highway 35. I-675 provides straightforward access to Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, while Highway 35 leads directly into downtown Dayton. For travel inside the city, North Fairfield and Dayton Xenia roads are the primary thoroughfares. Carrico says both are undergoing widening projects to better accommodate traffic flow. The closest airport is Dayton International Airport, which is 22 miles northwest.

Wright-Patterson Air Force Base is the city’s largest employer

Wright-Patterson Air Force Base is less than 20 miles north of the city and dates to 1917. The base employs more than 27,000 people that live in the surrounding region, and is home to the 88th Air Base Wing, among other units. It’s also the main campus of the Air Force's Institute of Technology, which specializes in aerospace and aviation technologies. "Because we border Wright-Patterson and have such a high military population, we always host Memorial Day and Veterans Day ceremonies, which have really high attendance," Carrico says. Over 8,000 people gather annually for the city's Fourth of July festivities, and nearly 2,000 people attend Winter Welcome to meet Santa Claus, listen to carolers and enjoy free spiced cider. Important to know

The FBI reports that Beavercreek’s violent crime rate is significantly lower than the national average, but property crime is slightly above. The city’s police department partners with volunteer organizations, like Citizens on Preventative Patrol, to improve response times to calls for service. Beavercreek has a moderate climate year-round, but when winter weather strikes, the Public Service Department quickly responds to weather issues affecting the roads. Before heavy snow and ice events, roadways are treated with salt brine, starting with high-traffic areas.
