Parks and nature reserves 3 miles from downtown Beaverton

About 3 miles outside of Beaverton, West Beaverton is a neighborhood surrounded by nature. “I think there are a lot of people who move to West Beaverton to be near industry and businesses like Nike and Intel,” says Toby Joy Zelt, resident of two years and owner of Wild Pup Adventures. Nike and Intel are major employers in the area, with their offices about 3 miles outside the neighborhood. However, Zelt’s work let her interact with the parks surrounding her home, within West Beaverton and beyond. She started Wild Pup after her dog was diagnosed with cancer. “I decided to quit what I was doing to take her on an adventure every day for the rest of her life,” Zelt says. “Within a week or two, I realized I could take other people’s dogs with us and do amazing, fun things together.” Much of that fun comes from exploring reserves such as Lowami Hart Woods Natural Area or hiking along the Powerline Trail. Locals travel into the city to attend events or eat at one of several restaurants, including Bamboo Sushi, and students can attend Beaverton School District, which earns an A from Niche.

West Beaverton surrounded by nature

West Beaverton residents are always minutes away from a park or trail. “Right near me is the Powerline Trail,” Zelt says. “A lot of people use it for biking, running or taking their kids in strollers.” Part of the larger Powerline Trail, the Westside Regional Trail connects several parks, including Burntwood Park, which features a playground where kids can run around. The trail leads into Mount Williams Park, a forested area with mountain views. People can also walk through Lowami Hart Woods, and Zelt sometimes brings dogs to Winkelman Park, which she calls “the best dog park in the neighborhood.” There are many other opportunities to explore nature surrounding the neighborhood, with the Columbia River Gorge and Mount Hood about 28 miles away and the Pacific Ocean about 83 miles away.

Colorful homes a short walk from the parks

Sidewalks line the streets of West Beaverton, making it easy for residents to walk to one of the several parks surrounding them. Manicured lawns are decorated with bushes, gardens and greenery. Colorful homes sit among the evergreen trees, ranging from bilevels and ranch styles from the mid-20th century to postmodern houses from the 1980s and new traditional builds. Prices for a three-bedroom range from $300,000 to $650,000, while larger properties can cost upwards of $700,000. Townhouses in the neighborhood typically cost between $325,000 and $525,000.

Locals travel into Beaverton for shopping and dining

Locals often travel into the heart of Beaverton, about 3 miles away, for a bite to eat, visiting restaurants such as Bamboo Sushi and Thai Bloom or Carina’s Bakery, which offers an exclusively vegan menu. “Even restaurants in Portland and Beaverton that are not vegan have great vegan or vegetarian options,” Zelt says. “It’s really hard to pick favorites when there’s so much good stuff.” At BG’s Food Cartel, patrons can try food from 15 vendors. Locals can get groceries from one of two Safeways near West Beaverton and do the rest of their shopping at Home Depot or Target, which are about 3 miles away.

Beaverton Farmers Market and Night Market

The Beaverton Farmers Market is held every Saturday morning from February to November, with more than 170 vendors selling baked goods, fresh produce and flowers. The Night Market is an annual celebration of many different cultures in Beaverton, modeled after international markets that bring together food and crafts from all over. Sparrowhawk Native Plants hosts a sale twice a year, letting residents find plants that will flourish in Beaverton’s ecosystem. “I love it, I think it’s a really great event,” Zelt says. “I’d want people to know about it.”

Students attend Beaverton School District

As part of Beaverton School District, students can start at Chehalem Elementary School, which receives a B from Niche, before attending Mountain View Middle School, which scores a B-plus. At Mountainside High School, which earns an A, students can join one of nearly 60 clubs, including service organizations such as PERIOD Club and Key Club.

West Beaverton is commuter-friendly

While people can drive around West Beaverton, with State Routes 8 and 10 running through the neighborhood, they can also take a TriMet bus into the city. “Public transportation seems to be really excellent and totally accessible to people all over West Beaverton,” says Zelt, although she often rides her bike or motorcycle to get around. Locals ride their bicycles to get around, with most roads having a bike lane. Zelt cautions people to ensure they are prepared for all sorts of weather if they decide to bike. “You have to be ready, wearing the right clothes and packing your bike bags properly,” Zelt says. Portland International Airport is about 22 miles away, and the closest emergency room is about 6 miles away at Providence St. Vincent.

My knowledge of the entire scope of jobs is limited. I work in high tech and my particular skills are suited to headquarter offices. The majority of jobs I see are in engineering, manufacturing, or retail. Corporate headquarters for most of the high tech companies are located elsewhere.

There isn't that much crime, but police are focusing their efforts incorrectly.

Due to the taxes and the lack of a cohesive plan, I don't think I would choose Beaverton again. We moved here from Los Gatos, CA 24 years ago and at the time I thought Beaverton was quaint and had a lot of potential. If there had been a real focus on the downtown area, it could had become a wonderful community focal point. There are charming older homes that surround the library area, but many of them are not kept up and are falling apart. These could be fixed up and the downtown area a hub of quaint eateries with outdoor seating and art galleries and people who make and sell unique items. If the homes were kept up, I believe they would attract people who would be interested in walking from their home to the these facilities, fostering an even closer community feel. Instead, there was always confusion on where the focal point should be, pushing toward the round, which is probably never going to work. The city planners should take another look at what Beaverton could be and how to make it really special.
