Lifelong residents in Normandy
Steeped in civic pride, Normandy was named after the French coastal region. Only 13 miles from downtown St. Louis, this suburb has plenty of open spaces, easy access to highways and public transit and home prices far below those elsewhere in St. Louis County. “We call this the ‘best kept secret,’” says Terry Gannon, a Realtor with RE/MAX Results, and a longtime Normandy resident who sells homes in the area. “I’ve lived here 70 years of my life. My kids live here. My siblings live here. We’re not going anywhere because we love it here.” But, while there’s lots to love, including being home to the University of Missouri St. Louis, Normandy is also in a part of the county where wages are lower than elsewhere, schools have underperformed and a complicated history of population shrinkage has existed over the past several decades.
Normandy's historic homes
Most of the homes in Normandy are post-civil war structures. Many were built in the early 1900s. They can be found in Normandy’s historic section of town. Normandy has a mix of Queen Anne Victorians, English Tudors, mid-century modern homes and bungalows. The median price for a single-family home is right around $80,000, with most homes selling in the $70,000 to $130,000 range. “Depending on if it has a basement or not, the mid-century moderns can go for $150,000 to $160,000. Some of the larger houses sell for more,” Gannon says.

Interstate 70 commutes and Metro bus lines
For folks on the go, Normandy has a wealth of ways to get around, in and out of town. Florissant Road is the main north/south thoroughfare residents count on for travel. However, it also has Interstate 70 running through the neighborhood and Interstate 170 just a couple of miles away. With Missouri 115, better known as Natural Bridge Road, bisecting town, motorists can reach most local destinations in 20 to 30 minutes or less. Public transportation also is plentiful, with Metro Transit buses servicing the length of Normandy and with two MetroLink light rail stops.
Ferguson food and shopping
Most shopping and dining can be found in the areas immediately surrounding Normandy. The great majority of restaurants would be considered fast food, although there are places for casual dining in nearby Ferguson at Ferguson Brewing Company, Vincenzo’s Italian Restaurant and a newer breakfast place called Elicious. “Those are all nice places with friendly staffs,” Gannon says. Shoppers can find their groceries at Schnucks in Ferguson. There’s a Save A Lot at North Oaks Plaza, 3 miles south of here. There you can also find some specialty shops with retail items.

St. Vincent County Park
St. Vincent County Park is a beloved Normandy activity spot and attraction. Covering an area more than 120 acres wide, the park includes a community center, water slide, playground, athletic fields, tennis courts and a trail system starting at the St. Vincent Greenway Trailhead. “When you go there on the weekend, it’s packed with people doing barbecues, picnics and celebrations. You get to see quite a bit of wildlife too,” Gannon says.

Normandy students attend first through eighth grade at the Lucas Crossing Elementary School Complex, which Niche grades D-plus. From there, they attend Normandy High School, which receives a Niche grade of D. The school has a robotics club that participates in the national FIRST Robotics Competition, which combines the excitement of sports with the academic rigors of science and technology. The schools belong to the Normandy Schools Collaborative, which Niche rates D and, which also recently reacquired local control of its school system.
