About Belle Glade, FL

About Belle Glade, FL

The heart of South Florida’s agriculture industry

Agriculture is at the heart of Belle Glade, a city more than 16,000 in South Florida founded in the 1920s as an epicenter for growing and processing crops. Today, sugarcane and vegetables are still grown near the town and serve as the lynchpin of the local economy. “It's just a small town, a good place to raise kids,” says Teresa Sullivan, an associate with RE/MAX Prestige Realty.

Sugarcane refining and farming form local industry

The heart of the city's agricultural industry is the Sugar Cane Growers Cooperative of Florida, a refinery that harvests 500 acres of sugarcane and produces 350,000 tons of raw sugar daily. Sullivan says sugarcane season lasts from around October to April, and the roads can be filled with trucks delivering the crop. And while the refinery does produce some smells, “for the most part, you don’t really notice it,” says Sullivan.
