Relatively new neighborhood in Bellingham, built into the wooded hillside
Though only 4 miles from downtown Bellingham, King Mountain is one of the city's newest and most secluded neighborhoods, designated in 2009 and mainly consisting of undeveloped forested land. Despite its name, King Mountain is more of a large hill set on the city's outskirts, offering views of Bellingham Bay in the distance. Bellingham's housing shortage, driven by an overall lack of space for new development, means that the few areas with open space, like King Mountain, are being developed for density with uniform small lots. “Any given street in King Mountain has similar housing density as the rest of Bellingham, but there’s just not as many finished streets yet,” says Julian Friedman, owner and real estate agent with Julian & Company of the Muljat Group.
What housing does exist here is enveloped by mature cedar and redwood forests, while city-owned open spaces like Van Wyck Park and Queen Mountain Open Space preserve the natural landscape. A new community garden opened in the neighborhood in April 2024, and a new elementary school may be built within the next several years. In the meantime, the views here have attracted several churches and spiritual institutions, including Spring Creek Bible Church and Bellingham Covenant Church. For shopping, King Mountain residents will have to travel just west to Meridian, which is home to a dense collection of national chain retailers; just east is the industrial employment center of Irongate.
Recently built homes with contemporary architecture
Homes across King Mountain are set close together on tiny lots along short streets; plenty of undeveloped land surrounds residential enclaves on the north and southeast. “It’s a good neighborhood for walking,” Friedman says. “There’s no major thoroughfares; it’s just a nice, pleasant area.” King Mountain is one of the few Bellingham neighborhoods to offer new construction, which is found mainly on the neighborhood's north side. Craftsman-style homes from the 2010s feature partial stone exteriors and gable trim, and recently built Modernist homes have geometric slanted roofs and tall windows; these 21st-century properties tend to sell for $700,000 to $1 million. In King Mountain’s southeast corner, most homes are 1970s minimal traditional split-levels or early 2000s bungalows, and both styles range from $500,000 and $750,000. While some yards feature grassy lawns, many residents opt for a garden of native shrubbery and low-water plantings.

After-school activities for local Bellingham students
Local students can attend Cordata Elementary School, rated C by Niche, before moving to the C-plus-rated Shuksan Middle, whose grant-funded BEATS program (short for Be at Shuksan) allows students to stay before or after school to get help with homework or join in activities that vary by day. The B-plus-rated Squalicum High offers more than 30 after-school activities, including an Aerospace Club, where students learn about physics and compete in the American Rocketry Challenge. Bellingham officials have plans to build a new elementary school to serve the growing King Mountain community; as of summer 2024, the tentatively named "Elementary 15" project is still in its early stages.

King Mountain is set just east of major north-south thoroughfare Meridian Street, which is lined with grocery stores like WinCo Foods, big-box stores like Walmart, and other national retailers. Casual eateries in Meridian include Asian 1, a fusion restaurant that serves sushi, Thai and Chinese cuisine. East of King Mountain in industrial Irongate, coffee stands include Little Dog Coffee Company, and El Tapatio NW Taco Truck serves authentic Mexican cuisine to go.

Forested walking trails and a newly opened community garden
Large swaths of undeveloped greenspace surround King Mountain, including Queen Mountain Open Space, set just north with narrow dirt trails that wind through mature coastal Douglas fir trees. Van Wyck Park, on the neighborhood's north side, is also an undeveloped open space, though the city could choose to develop it into a more traditional park in the future. The neighborhood's King Mountain Community Garden opened in April 2024, with a shared tool shed, a compost pile and an on-site well to help with water retention. North Bellingham Golf Course, a public 18-hole facility, is about 4 miles away.

Motorcycle races at the Hannegan Speedway
Hannegan Speedway, located just east in Irongate, is home to the Mount Baker Motorcycle Club. While the membership-only facility has set practice hours, members who put in more than 100 hours of service to the speedway can earn a gate key and practice at their leisure. From April until August, the speedway hosts Thursday Night Motorcross races. The facility is open to the public for events like Poker Runs, where racers collect random playing cards from checkpoints on the track, and the best poker hand wins at the end of the race.

The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
