Residential enclave set on the banks of Lake Whatcom
Set on the north shores of Lake Whatcom, Silver Beach is a quiet residential enclave offering distant mountain views and proximity to waterfront activities like kayaking and canoeing. Homes directly on the lakefront often have private docks, while those off the banks can access the water at Bloedel Donovan Park. About 4 miles from downtown Bellingham, Silver Beach trades busy commercial centers for small mom-and-pop shops like LakeLine, the local café. With lots of trails and sidewalks, locals can walk to nearby shops and parks, as well as Silver Beach Elementary School at the heart of the neighborhood. “It’s a really desirable side of town,” says Kirk Ghio, real estate broker with the Muljat Group. “People tend to move here and stay. They might sell because they’re ready for a bigger house, but they don’t want to move.”
The Silver Beach wraps around the north side of Lake Whatcom.

Boat launches, sand volleyball courts and rock gardens
Bloedel Donovan Park is the main public access point for Lake Whatcom with a small beach and boat launches for kayaks and canoes. “The lake can get pretty busy,” Ghio says. “On a summer day, there’s a lot going on.” The park also features basketball and sand volleyball courts near the water. On Silver Beach’s north side, Big Rock Garden Park encompasses a 2.5-acre garden with over 30 rock sculptures, surrounded by evergreen forests. In spring, the park flowers with lilies and azaleas; in the fall, maple trees blanket the landscape in brilliant reds and oranges. Greenspaces in Silver Beach are connected by walking paths and trails, some of which extend into other neighborhoods like Whatcom Falls.
Silver Beach residents also enjoy front row access to the best lakeside park in the area.

Late 20th-century homes and lakefront properties
Homes throughout Silver Beach were mainly built between 1970 and 2000, including Modern Craftsman-style properties and ‘90s contemporary homes with asymmetrical geometric exteriors and low-slope roofs. Craftsman bungalows from the 1920s are also peppered throughout the community, featuring covered front porches. Bungalows with two or three bedrooms often sell for between $500,000 and $700,000, while larger four-bedroom properties from the late 20th century sell for $600,000 to $1 million. Lakefront properties offer private docks for boating and fishing, going for $1 million to $1.5 million. Between the landscape and proximity to the lake, Silver Beach is a highly sought-after area. “Silver Beach gets really good light,” says Julian Friedman, owner and real estate agent with Julian & Company, of the Muljat Group. “It’s a little less wooded, and there’s more south and southwestern exposure, so homes get great light all day long.”

Annual Lake Whatcom Triathlon held at Bloedel Donovan Park
Held every summer, the Lake Whatcom Triathlon starts at Bloedel Donovan Park. Five different course options, including an Olympic course, vary in length and difficulty for competitors of different skill levels. While there aren’t any road closures during the event, part of the course extends on Northshore Drive; the Bellingham Police Department manages traffic during the race. Spectators can watch from the finish line or stay for a small award ceremony for some of the top performers.
