Part of a Beloit revitalization plan
Two miles north of revitalized downtown Beloit, Merrill is a neighborhood that’s also been targeted for revitalization. A non-profit group called Community Action has been working on constructing new homes in the neighborhood over the past 15 years. “We have built at least 60 homes in the neighborhood, providing them for first-time homeowners on vacant land that the city of Beloit has identified,” says Lexi Tintleman, a public relations manager with Community Action. “The homes are built with a partnership between area teens and construction crew members.” The teens are part of a program called Fresh Start, an education and job training program.
Merrill offers relatively affordable real estate compared to larger cities in Wisconsin.
Merrill features historic homes that often come with character and architectural detail.

Refurbished and new construction in Merrill
Prices range from $75,000 to $200,000 for bungalows and colonials from the early 20th century. Mid-century ranch-style homes are also typical. The houses on the lower end of the price range still need improvements. Some homes in the neighborhood have been refurbished, while new construction homes built by Community Action are energy efficient and at the upper end of the price range. Specific income guidelines need to be met to purchase the new houses. The neighborhood is rated a 4 on the CAP crime score index scale at the national average. Because this neighborhood is in an urban area, there is a higher active sound score for homes, according to the First Street website. Homes are far enough from the Rock River that they don’t pose a flood risk.
The Merrill Neighborhood is relatively walkable, with sidewalks lining many of its streets.

Merrill Community Sharing Garden
One of the projects that assisted in revitalizing the neighborhood was the creation of Merrill Community Sharing Garden on three vacant residential lots on Porter Avenue. It’s an urban garden that provides fresh produce for the neighborhood. “It’s another way to get neighbors involved. It’s great when you pass by and see the locals or the Fresh Start students helping in the garden,” Tintleman says. The garden serves as a makeshift classroom that teaches the community how to grow their food. Community Action also runs the Merrill Community Center and provides resources to those in need in the neighborhood.
Merrill is a neighborhood near Downtown that offers flexibility for walking to get around.
Turtle Island Park in Merrill Neighborhood is generally quiet and family-friendly.

Industry by the Rock River
Much of the industrial area near the Rock River consists of buildings from ABC Supply Company, a roofing supply business with its headquarters in Beloit, which has about 1,000 employees. Fairbanks Morse manufactures diesel engines, and American Construction Metals produces metal building products. Diane Hendricks, a billionaire businesswoman from Beloit, catalyzed downtown revitalization. Her influence can also be felt in sprucing up the property that used to be the Beloit Mall into the Eclipse Center, which opened in 2019 as a mixed-use development with a convention center, Rock County government offices, the Beloit Public Library and a charter school.
Transit options in Merrill include car, bus, train and walking.
Fun by the Rock River
With over 20 acres along the Rock River, Riverside Park is one of the city’s most popular attractions. Summer activities include the weekly Friday evening concerts called Music at Harry’s Place, named after the Harry C. Moore Pavilion, where the shows are held. Monday evenings are Dancing at Harry’s Place, with dance lessons at 7 p.m. and open dance at 8 at the pavilion. Along with traditional playground equipment, there are various climbing structures at Turtle Island Playground, including a giant turtle sculpture. Paddleboats can be rented out to use on the park’s lake and a portion of the Beloit River Walk goes by the park along the river. Regina Dunkin Park was formerly Summit Park. It is 7 acres with a walking trail and soccer field.
Beloit Memorial High School is known for its rich history and diverse student body.
Schools in the Beloit district
Depending on where kids live in the neighborhood, they could attend one of two elementary schools in the Beloit School District. Those in the northern part of the neighborhood are closer to Merrill Elementary School, and those in the southern part could attend Todd Elementary. Both receive C grades from Niche. Aldrich Middle School started serving kids in grades six through eight at the beginning of the 2023-24 school year, after a long time of being an intermediate school with grades four through eight. The school gets a C-minus. Beloit Memorial High School is rated a B-minus. Students can participate in the BACH Academy. BACH is an acronym that means business, arts, communications and hospitality, and it’s an opportunity for students interested in those fields to get career exposure through job shadowing. The Lincoln Academy is near the Eclipse Center and is a public K-12 charter school that does not have a Niche grade. Also at the center is the Beloit Public Library. Beloit College is a private liberal arts school with about 1,000 undergraduates. The campus is about a mile to the south.
Prime Time Pizza does carry out and delivery only
Specializing in Chicago-style deep-dish pies, Prime Time Pizza has no indoor seating, so the food is either for delivery or carry-out. Donuts, cookies, cake and bread are available at Old Fashion Bakery, a throwback to the old-time shop with sweet treats on display behind the glass case. Piggly Wiggly is a little over a mile away for grocery essentials. Quick items can be picked up at neighborhood grocery stores like Cinco De Mayo Supermarket.
