Golf resort community in Bend’s high desert
Set 15 miles north of downtown Bend, Juniper Preserve is a gated, rural resort area where health and activity are the focal points. “If you’re into golf, it’s lovely,” says Lynnea Miller, owner and principal broker of Bend Premier Real Estate who’s worked in the city for over 20 years. “If you’re into owning an equity membership and want to be more self-contained, it’s a great place.” Residents enjoy playing on one of two sandy, tree-covered golf courses and taking Pilates classes in the resort’s wellness center. Roads here are well-maintained, and the two-story Tuscan-designed homes have distant views of lush, hilly courses and the white-peaked Cascade Mountains. Miller says retirees live here, but families visit the pool area, attend annual golf events and venture outside the neighborhood for mountain biking adventures.
Golfing and pickleball on Juniper Preserve’s green landscape
Juniper Preserve’s main attraction is the Pronghorn Golf Club. This Jack Nicklaus Signature Course has 18 holes of desert-style golfing with views of the Cascades in the distance. Its Tom Fazio Championship Course features larger greens and more slopes than traditional desert-style courses. Residents also have access to three pickleball courts, a pool and guided tours in underground lava tubes located on the Fazio Golf Course. The resort also hosts occasional wellness activities like yoga and meditation and wine dinners in the Fazio Course’s rocky, dome-shaped Lava Cave. Roughly 30 miles north, Smith Rock State Park is a popular spot for hiking and mountain biking through deep river canyons, and folks also like traveling 37 miles southwest for winter skiing at Mt. Bachelor.
Coffee stops at the Coyote Lounge and dinner at Trailhead Grill
The neighborhood houses a handful of local restaurants. Residents can start their day with lattes and baked goods from the Coyote Lounge in the Juniper Lodge. Trailhead Grill is a pub-style eatery serving steak dinners with tavern fries. For a quick snack, The Village Market is the on-resort convenience store near Trailhead Grill. Within the Pronghorn Golf Club, True Spec Golf does custom club fitting and sells golf bags and accessories. Folks can head 16 miles south to Cascade Village Shopping Center for retail chains like Ross and Famous Footwear or grocery stores like Trader Joe’s.
Impressive single-family homes close to all Juniper Preserve amenities
Dozens of half to full-acre lots are for sale throughout Juniper Preserve, ranging between $150,000 to $300,000. Buyers are required to follow some architectural guidelines given by the resort like keeping a modern Northwest-style look to their home. Single-family homes are gathered near the neighborhood center along curvy asphalt roads with acres of high desert land—which sits several thousand feet above sea level—surrounding them. Many residents are within walking distance of golf courses and the resort spa. Early 2000s Northwest-style homes with stone facades and Tuscany-inspired designs sit on lots of less than half an acre, sometimes shaded by pine trees. These one to two-story properties have heated garages, veranda-covered back patios and in-ground hot tubs. Prices can range between $1.5 to $3 million. Early 2020s-built contemporary homes with slanted roofs and wooden beams have long, paved driveways and open front yards; these properties are priced within the $1.8 and $2.1 million range. All homeowners in Juniper Preserve can expect to pay up to $260 in monthly HOA fees. Villa townhomes falling in the $1 million range are also available for whole or fractional ownership; homeowners may stay there for several weeks in the spring and summer but rent out their place the rest of the year.
Car-dependent area with moderate traffic
U.S. Route 97 is roughly 17 miles west, providing access to nearby cities like Redmond. Juniper Preserve is a mostly car-dependent area, but Miller says people like walking around neighborhood streets. Traffic is moderate, and downtown Bend is about a 15-mile drive south via Pronghorn Club Drive, a major road in the area. Redmond Municipal Airport is a 23-mile drive north, and St. Charles Bend Hospital is 13 miles south.
Long list of student clubs at Ridgeview High
Redmond School District serves the area. Kids start at Tumalo Community School, which scores a B and continue to Obsidian Middle, which earns a C-plus. The B-minus-rated Ridgeview High is known for its array of student organizations like Girls Who Code and Fly Fishing Club.
Golf-viewing at the Ghost Tree Invitational
Every June, locals head to the Jack Nicklaus Course for the two-day Ghost Tree Invitational. Golfers compete in teams of four while attendees watch during the day. At night, people drink on the driving range at Pronghorn Golf Club, participate in a silent charity auction, then rock out to local musical performances at the main stage. Starting in May, Trailhead Grill hosts a Wednesday night summer series full of drinks, food and live music from local artists.
Preparing for wildfires
From July to September, homes in Juniper Preserve are at a moderately high risk of destruction from wildfires due to lightning storms and human-made fires mixing with the dry climate. Smoke from wildfires in neighboring states may also affect homeowners, impacting the air quality. The city recommends that homeowners store any firewood at least 30 feet away from their homes and regularly clean up leaves and pine needles from gutters. Locals can also sign up for emergency alert messages through Deschutes County to get updates on evacuation areas.
