Millburg is a small, rural community near Benton Harbor
About 7 miles east of Benton Harbor, Millburg is a small community of less than 600 people. It falls into a region known as the “Wedding Belt" of Southwest Michigan, where the farmland and woodlands have become popular backdrops for wedding venues, including two in the neighborhood. Territorial Road runs through the center of the community, complete with a small town center and a few local businesses. Kassie Prisk and her husband own D&V Motorsports, a local auto shop, and a recently reopened a convenience store. “It’s just a nice, quiet area with friendly people,” Prisk says. Millburg's CAP Index crime score of 2 out of 10 is below the national average.
Ranch-style homes with acres of land
Home prices in Millburg range from $130,000 to $270,000. Ranch-style homes are common, many including a built-in garage. Most homes were built between the mid- to late 1900s on an acre or more, with spacious backyards and wooded backdrops. Homes near town center tend to be closer together with smaller yards.
One bar and a few local businesses in the town center
Millburg’s short, three-block town center on Territorial Road has a few auto shops, a gas station and the neighborhood’s sole restaurant, Chief’s Bar, a family-run staple. The rustic bar has served burgers and its famous prime rib since 1948. “The bar is very friendly and welcoming,” says Prisk. “It reminds me of Cheers, where everyone knows everyone but they welcome in new people.” Chief’s is an established late-night hangout spot, especially on the weekends, when it’s open until 2 a.m. Shoppers can also hit up Dollar General, about 1 mile from town center. Benton Harbor’s main shopping corridor, about 7 miles away, has dozens of big-box retailers.
A few miles from Randall Park and Sarett Nature Center
While Millburg doesn’t have any parks, there are plenty of playgrounds and other recreational activities a short drive away. Randall Park, about 5 miles away in Coloma, has a wooden castle playground and picnic pavilions. Sarett Nature Center, about 4 miles away, offers 8 miles of hiking and cross-country skiing trails, a butterfly exhibit and educational activities for kids.
Free tours at Carter's Christmas Wonderland
Every holiday season, locals look forward to Carter’s Christmas Wonderland, a winter tradition started by Nicholas and Julia Carter back in 2004. Their yard is decorated with more than 70,000 lights, hundreds of inflatables and a walking path for people to explore the display for free while sipping hot chocolate. “They have something special each night,” says Prisk. “They’ll have Santa and Mrs. Claus, the Grinch and live reindeer. They do fun stuff the whole month of December.”

Students start at Martin Luther King Jr. Lower Elementary School followed by Fair Plain East Elementary for fourth and fifth grade. Both schools receive a D-plus grade from Niche. Students then head to Fair Plain Middle School, rated D, and Benton Harbor High, rated C-minus.
