Elmwood has many restaurants and shops, mostly on College and Telegraph Avenues. “College Ave is great for shopping and restaurants,” says Powell. “You see a lot of couples going out for the night over there.” There’s a variety of cuisine styles available up and down the avenue, from casual gastro pubs like IN THE WOOD to Mexican food at 5 Tacos and Beers Berkeley. Telegraph Avenue offers different flavors, like hearty burgers and shakes at old-school burger joint The Smokehouse, or drinks at The White Horse Inn. Whole Foods is the nearest grocery store, located just outside the neighborhood. Pretty Penny and Elements both offer boutique clothing, accessories and footwear. The Berkley Playhouse. Whether Shakespeare is the show or a modern play, the playhouse brings culture and entertainment to the neighborhood.

Elmwood has sidewalk-lined streets with California buckeye, coast live oak, and elderberry trees throughout the neighborhood. Front yards often have gardens, bushes and shrubs. Elmwood has a mix of single-family homes and condos. Three-bedroom craftsman homes sell for $1.2 to $2.5 million, and four-bedroom craftsman homes sell for $2.6 million to $2.8 million. Elmwood has a mix of renters and buyers, thanks to its proximity to the University of California, Berkeley. “You see a lot of rentals and houses where people rent out rooms to students,” says Powell. “There’s a lot of [homeowners] who have been there forever.”

The theater's brown wood exterior and A-frame roof evoke the aesthetic of the The Globe Theater's stage, and every type of play, from Shakespeare to contemporary works, happen at this neighborhood theater. The Berkeley Playhouse also offers courses and classes for aspiring stage performers.
Berkeley Unified Public Schools
The area is served by Berkeley Unified Public Schools, which has an A rating on Niche. Emerson Elementary and Willard Middle Schools both have an A rating and are within walking distance of many homes in the neighborhood. Berkeley High School has an A-plus rating and offers a variety of activities for students, like bikepacking, cooking and miniature wargaming.
Parks and outdoor spaces near Elmwood
Elmwood is mostly filled with homes and businesses, but there is one greenspace tucked between the gridded streets – Willard Park. This grassy oasis is a simple field with several scattered trees, two tennis courts and a playground. The Stonewall-Panoramic Trail is about a mile away and leads into the Claremont Canyon Regional Preserve. This 208-acre forest is filled with north coastal scrub, oak and bay trees, and California blackberry plants and reins orchids grow along trails that wind through the preserve.
Getting around Elmwood
There are BART bus stops along Ashby Avenue, connecting Elmwood to the rest of the city. Interstate 80 is less than five miles away, providing access up and down the coast and into downtown San Francisco. The San Francisco International Airport is about 25 miles away and the Alta Bates Summit Medical Center, a major employer and health provider in the area, is inside the neighborhood.
