Suburban sprawl beside schools and the NIH headquarters
Huntington Terrace, located in Montgomery County, is a residential community of single-family homes. The popular old-growth trees throughout the area provide generous shade in the warm Maryland summers. The community is sought after for its proximity to the National Institutes of Health, the shopping and dining heart of Downtown Bethesda, and the county’s highly-rated schools, including Bradley Hills Elementary, which is within walking distance from home.
Spacious Craftsman, colonial and Cape Cod homes
Home values in Huntington Terrace range from $1 million to $3 million, varying by square footage and lot size. Avi Galanti, Executive Vice President at Compass Real Estate and owner of Galanti Group, notes that homes in Huntington Terrace do not stay on the market long. “They tend to sell very quickly, and many have multiple offers and sell over asking price,” he says. Many of the neighborhood’s approximately 300 single-family homes were built from the 1920s through the 1940s as part of two different phases of development. “You will find a mix of architectural styles, including Cape Cods, colonials, split-levels and some newer Craftsman-style homes,” Galanti says. There are Cape Cod homes that start in the low $900,000s and recently remodeled 1950s contemporary-style homes that are going for about $1 million. While the larger Craftsman-style homes built in the past decade cost around $2 million, Traditional-style homes run for about $2.5 million.
Smaller neighborhood parks and Bethesda Trolley Trail are nearby
Though there are parks around Huntington Terrace, there are more neighborhood pocket parks than genuine parklands. Greenwich Neighborhood Park is in the southwest corner of Huntington Terrace; it’s 4 acres of green space that also offers basketball and tennis courts and shaded bench seating. If you’re looking for something a little more vigorous, hike the nearby Bethesda Trolley Trail, a four-mile path that connects Bethesda to North Bethesda and is popular with walkers and bicyclists; the closest access is at the intersection of Old Georgetown Road and McKinley Street. Bradley Hills Elementary is next to Bradley Park, with a playground for children and a tennis court; there’s also the Bradley Park Community Garden to plant fruits and vegetables and help school kids learn about plant life.
Shop at Woodmont Triangle and Bethesda Row, less than 2 miles from home
The nearest place to get a bite to eat is Call Your Mother, a Jewish deli offering a variety of signature bagel sandwiches and sweet treats from an old trolley car. Take Old Georgetown Road south 2 miles to the Bethesda Row retail center’s dining options, like The Salt Line for oysters or the sangria and tapas at Spanish Diner. “Mon Ami Gabi is another great place,” Galanti says. “It’s a neighborhood staple; everyone knows about it.” The Parisian-style bistro offers a lunch, dinner and brunch menu and serves a variety of classic French dishes. Bethesda Row has major retailers, from Apple and Anthropologie to Williams Sonoma, as well as several car dealerships. North of Bethesda Row and just a mile from Huntington Terrace is Woodmont Triangle, another shopping district where locals can grab margaritas at Gringos & Mariachis for happy hour or try their birria empanadas. Or take their furry friends to the gastropub chain Dog Haus, with a pet-friendly outdoor patio and a menu of craft beers, burgers and German-style sausages. There’s also a Trader Joe’s in Woodmont Triangle for groceries. West of Woodmont Triangle along Old Georgetown Road is Bethesda Central Farm Market, a year-round market offering locally sourced produce, music, wine and activities for kids.
Montgomery County schools are never far from home
Students here are part of Montgomery County Public Schools and are likely to attend Bradley Hills Elementary School, with an A-rating overall on Niche, and located a couple blocks west of Huntington Terrace so that kids can stroll from their front door to school and back. Thomas W. Pyle Middle School also has an A-rating, and is ranked on Niche as the No. 9 best public middle school in the state. Finally, Walt Whitman High School boasts an A-plus rating and offers career and technical education clusters in business management, education and information technology.
Take the metro or drive 9 miles to D.C.
Huntington Terrace residents can commute to the nation’s capital by car or metro. Downtown D.C. is a 9-mile drive along Wisconsin Avenue and Massachusetts Avenue, taking about 35 minutes. The Bethesda metro station is a mile from home and offers Red Line access. “There are also a lot of people who work in Downtown Bethesda and the nearby medical centers who walk and bike to their jobs,” Galanti says. Walter Reed Army Medical Center and the National Institute of Health headquarters are next to Huntington Terrace across Old Georgetown Road. These government medical facilities, in total, employ over 30,000 people, so residents who work there have a convenient 1-minute walk to work.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
