Nothing eerie about life in Vermilion
Vermilion is a sleepy little beach town where a lighthouse sits at the end of Main Street and the river cuts between rows of homes like roads. Along the shore of Lake Erie, the neighborhood has a small-town feel, with a quaint downtown area and quiet streets. Wendy LaForce-Zambo, a Realtor with Howard Hannah Real Estate Services, says, “It’s like a little Martha’s Vineyard.”

A miniature Groundhog Day
Every fall since 1973, The Woollybear Festival takes place in downtown Vermilion, on the shores of Lake Erie. According to myth, when the leaves change and the Woolly Bear caterpillar hatches, the amount of black or orange on its bands predicts the severity of the coming winter. Now, on a Sunday when the Browns aren’t playing, the community gathers for the largest one-day festival in Ohio, attracting over 100,000 people.
Tastes to suit every palate
Downtown Vermilion, or “Harbor Town” as locals call it, has rows of restaurants and stores inside colorful Federal-style buildings. With awnings overlooking doorways, locals can spend a weekend afternoon window shopping, popping into small galleries or wandering through small parks. The Pavilion Grill is a small spot with a wooden interior that’s a local favorite. Outside the downtown area, Paper Moon Vineyards & Winery has an indoor tasting room and an outdoor grassy fire pit area. Children and pets are welcome – if both are properly supervised. Grab groceries from Giant Eagle Supermarket on Liberty Avenue, next door to a McDonald’s and Dollar Tree.

Drop anchor along the shore
Prices vary, depending on where homes are located. Away from the shore, most properties fall between $150,000 and $400,000. Common styles include ranch-style, split-level and Colonial-Revival that sit on wide roads with shady trees and sidewalks. Close to the water, the Vermillion River backs up to some houses, whose prices can start around $800,000 and reach the millions. These properties often include docks, where locals can take their boats out on the river.

A beacon for the community
The Vermilion Lighthouse at Main Street Beach defines the community. Looking over Lake Erie, the lighthouse welcomes visitors at any time of day. Sherod Park, on West Lake Road, spans 24 acres and includes a beach where locals can swim, stone trails, grassy paths and a sprawling playground. The park offers panoramic views of Lake Eerie from its rocky coast. There are a few pocket parks in Vermilion’s sleepy downtown area, like East Exchange Park, where a stairway leads to a small green space, with lampposts and a white gazebo. Paved walkways meander between well-maintained bushes and plants, leading toward the Vermilion River. Hit the links at Vermilion Country Club, which features a 12-hole golf course, and, after the game, dine in the club’s restaurant.
