Indiana Dunes is nothing like the rest of the state, and residents are well aware of that. “A lot of Northwest Indiana is just big, flat cornfields,” explains Jason Moon, a Northwest native and Realtor with Trueblood Real Estate. “The dunes have character. There are rolling hills, mature trees, woods and grasslands. You might even have a porch overlooking the vista.” Quiet, private residences are hidden among the thickets, where tree frogs are the rowdiest locals, and Sandhill Cranes replace planes flying overhead. Just blocks from one of the nation’s most ecologically studied national parks, residents are privy to the grandeur of Lake Michigan without the hustle and bustle of the city across the water.

Parks
Indiana Dunes National Park holds one of the most diverse ecosystems on the continent, where a handful of history’s greatest ecologists have conducted their studies over the last century. “There’s nothing quite like it,” Moon explains. “Anywhere around Beverly Shores, you’re within walking distance of the national park. It has contour and character, one of the best areas in Northwest Indiana for that kind of terrain.” Stretching 15 miles along the Indiana Coast on Lake Michigan, the park covers 15,000 acres and has 50 miles of trails, including the Calumet and Porter Brickyard bike trails. Enveloped by the national park is Indiana Dunes State Park, where Sandhill Cranes perch and tree frogs sing. From fishing to sunbathing, biking, horseback riding, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, the dunes are an attraction year-round for both residents and out-of-towners.
Homes
Privacy and unobstructed views are highly coveted perks of living on the shoreline, though many residents dwell deeper in the brush, where quiet and proximity to the dunes are equally sought-after. Beverly Shores' historic cottages are tucked into the dense woods, branching off single-lane residential streets. Others overlook the water, boasting international-style architecture or modern lake house façades. Their long, paved driveways aren’t so different from those of the ranch-style homes and bungalows next door in the Town of Pines. Farther down the beach, Dune Acres’ Prairie Homes feature expansive windows, resting atop tall, grassy bluffs. While custom single-family homes range in price from $800,000 to $2 million, those farther inland with less square footage are priced between $200,000 and $500,000. Attached garages and minimalist landscaping enhance the neighborhood’s original, vintage atmosphere.
Shopping and Dining
The nearby hubs of Chesterton and Michigan City, both within 3 miles of the national park, lend amenities and eateries to the Indiana Dunes community. “Both have downtown areas with restaurants and things like that,” Moon says. “There are some pockets closer to the dunes with a gas station or market, but for everything else, you’re pretty much going to those surrounding areas.” Historic Downtown Chesterton orients around Calumet Road, where Lucrezia Café has been serving classic Italian fare out of a Victorian mansion since 1998. Diners can bask in the kitschy décor or take in the rays on the patio, where the tallest Japanese Maple tree in Northwest Indiana perches out front. Boutiques neighbor ice cream parlors and small businesses like The Willow Shop plant nursery. Greasy cravings are best satiated at The Original George’s Gyros Spot, a family-owned operation serving classic Italian sausage, cheese dogs and gyro platters for more than 20 years. The essentials are shopped at Jewel-Osco, or at Michigan City Plaza off Route 20, where ALDI and Menards sit next to Walmart Supercenter. Closer to home, Goblin and the Grocer in Beverly Shores is a quaint market and pub selling everything from fresh bread to meats and artisan kitchenware.
Schools
Students are divided between two districts: Duneland School Corporation and Michigan City Area Schools. Those in Duneland will begin at Yost Elementary and Chesterton Middle School, earning a B-plus and A-minus on Niche, respectively. Chesterton Senior High School earns an A, offering advanced placement courses and dual enrollment opportunities with both Purdue Northwest and Ivy Tech Community College. Those zoned for Michigan City begin at Pine Elementary before heading to Barker Middle School, both of which earn a C-plus on Niche. Michigan City High School earns a B-plus, encouraging students to partake in their wide array of extracurriculars like the National Honor Society.
Transportation
Route 12 and Route 20 run parallel to Interstate 94, all three stretching across the coast. Residents branch off on Route 49 to reach Chesterton, 3 miles south, while Route 12 reaches approximately the same distance northeast into Michigan City. “The South Shore Line (SSL) takes commuters to work in less than an hour,” Moon says. “It’s a 45-minute ride to Downtown Chicago.” Both the Dune Park and Beverly Shores Metra stations are part of the SSL, connecting Northwest Indiana to Chicagoland. Drivers can take I-90 38 miles into the city, or 43 miles to Chicago Midway International Airport. The closest emergency room is located about 6 miles east in the New Franciscan Health Medical Center, just south of Michigan City on I-94.
