Space and seclusion in Big Rock
Wide open spaces and familiar faces await in Big Rock, 50 miles west of downtown Chicago. “Residents of Big Rock enjoy a small, hometown atmosphere,” says Stacey Puett, a real estate agent with Fathom Realty. “It’s the kind of town where everybody knows everybody, and neighbors help each other out.” Nature preserves and sprawling farmland set the scene for the tight-knit, rural village with deep roots in agriculture. The quiet, leafy streets also offer residential privacy and homes developed over more than a century.

Homes
Being farther from the city center, Big Rock residents drive down peaceful backroads lined with houses on anywhere from a half-acre to more than 10 acres. While separation from neighbors is common, housing styles cater to a variety of needs. Modest Cape Cods and split-levels to Colonial Revivals and American Foursquares are just some of the options here. “You get that country lifestyle, and there are fewer restrictions on those properties than on those in the cities,” says Magdalena Emmert, a Realtor with Kettley & Co. Inc. – Yorkville. “There’s more flexibility to make the property your own.” Price points are equally varied. A home needing modern updates can sell for $160,000 to $250,000, while expansive new construction may cost $1.45 million. However, most homes in Big Rock sell for $300,000 to $550,000.

Nature preserves and sporting hubs
Along with the extra elbow room homes provide here, community green spaces allow locals to stretch their legs and enjoy fresh air. Big Rock Park District is a hub for virtually every sport, with soccer fields, tennis and volleyball courts, and baseball diamonds used for recreational league games. Parents can also let their kids burn off some energy on the playground. A half-mile walking loop path is frequented by dog walkers. Golfers will want to play a round of 18 at Rich Harvest Farms, which has frequently been listed on Golf Digest’s “America’s 100 Greatest Golf Courses.” The fairways wind along streams, ponds and wooded areas, adding to the course’s challenging nature. Just 4 miles from the village center is one of the area’s outdoor hotspots, Big Rock Forest Preserve, which gets especially crowded in the summer months when locals fish for bluegill, catfish and carp from the shores of Siegler Lake. People also hike, bike or go horseback riding throughout the preserve’s 10 miles of trails snaking through marshes and woodlands. Once snow starts to fall, adventure seekers head here for cross-country skiing.

Plowing Match gives a glimpse of Big Rock's past
The village pays homage to its heritage as a farming community through the Big Rock Plowing Match, a longstanding tradition dating back 125 years. “It’s exactly how it sounds. People watch as tractors plow the fields at Plowman’s Park,” says Kathy Metzger, a Realtor with Baird & Warner Real Estate. The goal is to cut the sharpest lines in the field, with the rules of the contest dating back to the late 1800s. Locals can also watch the professional bull riding competitions or enjoy food from local vendors as live bands perform. The carnival rides are another popular feature of the event.

Shopping and Dining
Retail and restaurants are few and far between, but Big Rock Café is “the local hangout,” Metzger says. “It’s a quaint diner with an old-school feel.” Regulars keep coming back to the
cafe for its generous portions. Breakfast platters are piled high with biscuits and gravy or stacks of pancakes. A claim to fame for the village is More Polish Pottery, which attracts visitors from around the region who want to peruse the thousands of intricately designed, handmade pieces made from clay native to Poland. The unique store began as a small shop in the owner’s garage. For grocery essentials, locals make the 7-mile drive to ALDI or Jewel-Osco in neighboring Sugar Grove.

Smaller class sizes at Hinckley-Big Rock Schools
Students here are zoned for the Hinckley Big Rock Community Unit School District No. 429. The elementary, middle and high schools sit near the village center, making for easy commutes to and from class. Metzger says, “The schools are much smaller, which appeals to a lot of people moving to the area.” The student body at Hinckley-Big Rock Elementary School is the largest of the three area schools, with 333 total students. The elementary school earns a B-minus from Niche, while Hinckley-Rock Middle School earns a B overall. B-plus-rated Hinckley-Big Rock High School has a robust athletics program, and in 2020, a new field was built for the baseball team that previously played at Plowman’s Park, 5 miles away.
