Quiet suburb with community garden and farmer's market close to ACIPCO plant

Acipco-Finley is partially named after the Finley Memorial Yard, built by the Southern Railway in 1915. The other part of this neighborhood's name is the abbreviation for the American Cast Iron Pipe Company, which has been a part of the community since it was established in 1905. To this day, the neighborhood is a quiet place convenient for many residents who work for the company, which invests in a community garden and food distribution events. "Lots of people who live in Acipco-Finley work at the plant," says Ben Hedden, a Realtor at Bham Realty with over $55 million in sales. "Even with the plant, it's actually pretty quiet in the neighborhood." The neighborhood also features a robust community garden and is home to the Alabama Farmer's Market.

Craftsman homes at affordable prices in Acipco-Finley

Most of the homes were built in the early 20th century, serving as homes for the first group of workers. Styles range from the simple geometry of Craftsman homes to the simplicity of National and ranch-style houses. "The competitive element in this neighborhood is the price," says Hedden, "You're looking at mostly sub-$100k homes in an up-and-coming area that's also close to downtown." Some homes need repairs, while others have received additions and renovations. Home prices range from $20,000 for a home needing repairs to $100,000 for a renovated Craftsman house.

Community gardens and farmers markets offer fresh produce in Acipco-Finley

ACIPCO partnered with Grace Klein Community, a mutual aid non-profit, to create the Acipco-Finley community garden. Cucumbers, tomatoes, okra and various flowering plants that attract bees and other pollinators, are grown in the garden and distributed to those in need. More produce, along with crafts and other wares, are sold next door at the Alabama Farmers Market, open every day from 6 am to 7 pm. Also found at the market is Taquería La Herradura, offering delicious tortas, burritos and other Mexican staples. The family-owned Eagle's Restaurant has been a community fixture since 1951, and it serves tasty southern comfort fare like ox tails, fried pork chops and chicken wings. Another beloved local spot is Niki's West, which has been open since 1957 and offers a relaxing and inviting atmosphere with its old-fashioned southern buffet.

Cycling at Finley Roundhouse and basketball games at North Birmingham Park

The neighborhood is home to Finley Roundhouse, an old railroad building near Interstate 65. Built in 1915 for the Southern Railway, the large, circular structure was designed to service locomotives and is now a popular bicycling and skateboarding spot. "It's one of two surviving roundhouses in Birmingham and the largest in Alabama," says former resident and local historian Khari Marquette. Marquette is the leader of a community campaign to save and restore the historical relic for future generations. "Ideally, I'd love to see it turned into a museum and event venue for the community," says Marquette. Less than three miles away is North Birmingham Park, which features tennis and basketball courts along with an indoor recreation center.
