Quiet suburb with community garden and farmer's market close to ACIPCO plant
Acipco-Finley is partially named after the Finley Memorial Yard, built by the Southern Railway in 1915. The other part of this neighborhood's name is the abbreviation for the American Cast Iron Pipe Company, which has been a part of the community since it was established in 1905. To this day, the neighborhood is a quiet place convenient for many residents who work for the company, which invests in a community garden and food distribution events. "Lots of people who live in Acipco-Finley work at the plant," says Ben Hedden, a Realtor at Bham Realty with over $55 million in sales. "Even with the plant, it's actually pretty quiet in the neighborhood." The neighborhood also features a robust community garden and is home to the Alabama Farmer's Market.

The neighborhood is home to Finley Roundhouse, an old railroad building near Interstate 65. Built in 1915 for the Southern Railway, the large, circular structure was designed to service locomotives and is now a popular bicycling and skateboarding spot. "It's one of two surviving roundhouses in Birmingham and the largest in Alabama," says former resident and local historian Khari Marquette. Marquette is the leader of a community campaign to save and restore the historical relic for future generations. "Ideally, I'd love to see it turned into a museum and event venue for the community," says Marquette.
