Airport Hills

Suburban Neighborhood in Birmingham, Alabama

Jefferson County 35206, 35217

$119,819 Average Value

Aviation fans will feel right at home in the heavily residential area of Airport Hills. Airport Hills includes the smaller neighborhoods of Brummit Heights, Airport Highlands, Brownsville Heights, Maple Hills and Penfield Park. Home prices range from $50,000 to $180,000, with houses in a variety of architectural styles. Craftsman cottages, full-brick ranch-style homes, Tudor revival houses and colonial revival homes are all found in the area. Surrounded by rolling hills and consisting of a great deal of wide-open land, residents enjoy scenic drives and incredible views of the airport and Birmingham City.

South Airport Highlands is part of the Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport Opportunity Zone. What this means is that the area benefits from the Birmingham Inclusive Growth Partnership, which aims to attract investors to the area while improving the lives of residents. Economic growth and development are around the corner for this community. School-aged kids in the area attend Robinson Elementary School, home of the Roadrunners. Depending on where they live in the community, they’ll be attending either Ossie Ware Middle School or Martha Gaskins Middle School. Teenaged students attend Huffman High School, which offers various career academies, including the cosmetology academy and the academy of architecture and construction.

The Birmingham Airport Authority hosts a Summer Youth Work Program, which allows students in the area to gain hands-on experience working at the airport. The five-week program includes professional development, exposure to the aviation industry, financial management sessions, business etiquette, interviewing skills, writing skills and more. For most of the teens that participate, this is their first job. Not only do they get to earn some money, but they get an incredible start to their professional careers.

Open to all Airport Hills residents, the Brownsville Heights Community Center offers plenty of programming for children and senior citizens. Open since 2012, the center has a meeting space, activity rooms and a media room. Residents can stroll along its outdoor walking trail, which leads to a playground for local children to enjoy. The nearby Pine Knoll Park offers residents a basketball and a tennis court for friendly games with neighbors under the shade of several mature trees. If you like to golf, Roebuck Golf Course is a short distance away. Fondly referred to as “Roegusta” by locals, this historic 19-hole golf course has been a community staple since 1911.

While Airport Hills is mainly residential, residents can still find some great places to eat just outside the community. Alpha Charlie Grill fits right in with its aviation-themed décor. The eatery offers American food staples like wings, burgers and deli sandwiches. For additional dining options, locals can head to Pinson Valley Parkway. There are several casual restaurants to choose from, including American Ranch House, Taqueria Apatzingán y Billares, Daylight Donuts and Hong Kong.

Residents of Airport Hills enjoy a feeling of seclusion from the busier areas of Birmingham City while benefiting from proximity to the artsy community of East Lake. Plus, the Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport is right next door whenever locals want to take off on an adventure to faraway places.
