The city's first Black high school
Students can begin their education from Pre-K to the 8th grade at Washington Elementary School, which scores a C- on Niche. From there, they can attend C-plus-rated A.H. Parker High School, initially founded in 1900 as Birmingham's first public school for Black students. "The young people that come through these halls today are challenged with the awesome history that is behind them," says Barry McNealy, a social studies teacher at Parker High School. "They're taking that history into the future. And we pass it on, and we keep passing it on."

Historic fixer-uppers near the Princeton Baptist Medical Center
The homes of Arlington-West End are generally not far from the area's historical roots, for better or for worse. Homes originally built in the 1920s and 30s are a common sight and bring a sense of historic charm. Lower-than-average listing prices come with a need for a fair amount of renovation. Narrow sidewalks connect the grid of residential zones to the Princeton Baptist Medical Center and beyond, encouraging a sense of community and walkability. Bungalows are a popular style of home in the area, along with ranch-style. Homes tend to have full lawns with sweetgum trees and red maples that follow the sidewalks and occasional driveway. Fixer-upper ranch homes can be found in the low-$70,000s, while centennial bungalows typically fall in the low-$100,000s. A fully renovated Arts & Crafts home can reach the high-$200,000s.
