Alabama's historic coal country
As the piece that binds Birmingham’s Pratt City community together, Central Pratt lies in the heart of what was once the city’s thriving coal industry. Since the mines closed in the 1950s, Central Pratt has grown into a residential area connecting Greater Birmingham to the vast swathes of woodland stretching west and across Alabama. Although homes in the area often need renovation, they tend to be more secluded than most areas surrounding the Magic City and lower-than-average in price. And with the recent construction of a new park, there’s room for revitalization within the neighborhood.

Sports and shelter in Pratt City Park
First proposed after tornadoes in 2011 laid waste to many parts of Pratt City, Pratt City Park is a 15.82-acre stretch of greenery equipped with a football field, baseball diamond, basketball courts, playground, outdoor amphitheater and more. Walking trails circle the area, cutting through intricately landscaped flowerbeds and wide-open grass fields. Pratt City Park is also the home of three storm shelters, erected in 2016 to protect locals from future tornado seasons.
With its many parks, Central Pratt is a great location for pet owners.

Easy access to downtown Birmingham
Located between Route 78 and Interstate 20, Central Pratt is a convenient drive to downtown Birmingham. “It’s 10 to 15 minutes tops,” says Betty Minor, a Birmingham native who’s served the community as a Realtor for over 30 years. “That’s a huge benefit to the area.” For trips further afield, the Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport is located 10 miles east, on the other side of the Magic City itself. Public bus lines are available through Birmingham’s Max Transit service, with regular stops on Avenue F serviced roughly every half hour.

Historic homes in need of renovation
Homes in Central Pratt tend toward “fixer-upper” status, most of which require extensive renovation and structural upgrades. Well-worn sidewalks line streets dotted with cheerfully painted historic homes alongside condemned houses with boards in their windows. However, classic buildings and lower real estate prices might be enough to entice bargain hunters, flippers and part-time amateur contractors with the promise of long-term projects or investment opportunities. Craftsman, split-level and ranch-style homes are common, with a significant percentage built in the 1920s, 30s, and 50s. New construction is rare, though community and neighborhood associations were pushing for newer homes in the Pratt City area at large. “They’ve been building a lot of improvements in that area,” says Minor. A bare-bones bungalow can start in the low $10,000s, while a move-in ready ranch-style home can reach the low $60,000s.

Football and fishing
Every October at Logan Field, the Magic City Classic pits the football teams of Alabama A&M and Alabama State in a rivalry that’s been a local favorite since 1945. For something a little more laid-back, the East Lake Fishing Rodeo is an annual tradition that challenges anglers of all ages to catch the most brag-worthy catfish over the course of a single day in nearby East Lake.
