Factory village at the center of the Civil Rights Movement perseveres through adversity
Collegeville started as worker’s housing in the early and mid-20th century, built right next to factories and railroads in North Birmingham. The community later came to prominence during the Southern Civil Rights Movement. The congregation of the now-historic Bethel Baptist Church was instrumental in protest efforts that led to a successful desegregation of public transportation. Many of the original worker houses are still in the neighborhood today. Though the community continues to face challenges related to housing and soil quality, local restoration funds and city-sponsored revitalization projects aim to improve conditions and provide essential education and resources to residents.
