Near the southern edge of Ruffner Mountain lies Eastwood, a Birmingham neighborhood surrounding the site of one of the first indoor shopping malls in the Deep South. Eastwood Mall opened in 1960 and operated for several decades before closing in 2004. Today, the Eastwood Village Shopping Center stands in its place, occupied with clothing department stores and big box retailers. Eastwood provides residents with close access to Birmingham's museums and entertainment options, as well as an array of neighborhood shopping and outdoor escapes.

Eastwood has several regional chains that are popular among locals. The Juicy Seafood is a local Alabama dining franchise offering fresh options, from succulent lobster and crab to oysters and scallops. There's also Pancho's Mexican Grill, which serves up comforting staples amid colorful, vibrant décor. A Casual counter-service chain, American Deli, can also be found in the area.
Shopping for daily necessities is made easy with a Walmart Supercenter at the Eastwood Village Shopping Center. The center also includes a Ross Dress for Less, Party City and Five Below. The commercial corridor has several retail plazas with clothing shops and storefronts, including the Village East Shopping Center and Crestwood Festival Center. Eastwood also has an Amazon distribution facility on the northwestern side that opened a few years ago.

Managed by a local nonprofit, the sprawling greenspace offers over 1,000 acres of urban forest that connects the area to neighborhoods through 14 miles of trails. Through membership, locals can participate in hiking groups and EcoArts programs. Nature enthusiasts may also flock to Flora Johnston Nature Park to enjoy the 2.2-mile loop trail. The pathway is dog-friendly and not very crowded, providing a peaceful experience. Hikers can relax by the creek and enjoy the woodland landscape.
Birding is another excellent option at the park, housing many species of sparrows, wren and blackbirds. Sports fans can head to Lawson Field Stadium, a 7,500-seat lighted football stadium. Built during the late 1960s, the stadium serves as the playing grounds for local high school football teams. The stadium was once the home field for the Birmingham Steel Magnolias women's football team.

Traveling around and away from Eastwood
Eastwood has a few medical care facilities in the neighborhood, but many will go to Ascension St. Vincent's Birmingham for most healthcare needs. Interstate 20 runs parallel to Crestwood Boulevard, as known as Highway 78; both thoroughfares connect the commercial section to the rest of the region. Commuters have limited public transportation. However, bus stops for the city's Max Transit system are dotted along Montclair Road. Just 5 miles from the center of the community lies Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport, the largest in the state.

Students attend nearby schools
Children in the area are zoned for Avondale Elementary, about 5 miles east of the neighborhood. Sixth to eighth graders can stay inside Eastwood to attend W.E. Putnam Middle School, which offers extracurricular activities like Glee Club, Technology Club and Debate Team. At Woodlawn High, students can participate in the Academy of Business or take dual enrollment courses offered through the Early College magnet program. Each public school earned a C-minus grade from Niche.
Avondale Elementary School sits on top of Red Mountain with plenty of breathing views.
