Birmingham's Fairview neighborhood is part of Shopping City, a historic retail hub experiencing a resurgence. This commercial area was so large it had its own trolley system. "Fairview is closely related to the Bush Hills neighborhood, which is growing," says local Toney Alva, who owns a business within the community. Both neighborhoods are undergoing revitalization through a collaboration of nonprofits and government support. The residents of this tight-knit community are anticipating further commercial development near Shopping City. Today, the community is experiencing initiatives such as The Opportunity Center, which focuses on arts and culture. In fact, local Realtor Amanda Dabbs believes in the revitalization effort and began working in the area to help "give back to the community."

Most Fairview homes were built between the 1920s and 1960s; Many are investment properties that home buyers can make their own. The established streets of Fairview show an abundance of housing styles, including workers' cottages, bungalows, and prairie-style homes. Many display a rustic charm with wooden houses with gabled roofs and brick exterior elevations suited for the region's rolling hills. Lawns are often small and neatly kept, and homes in the neighborhood range from $50,000 to around $200,000. "Fairview is an older area where many people can get to know their neighbors," Alva says.
