Welcome to close-knit Oak Ridge Park
Oak Ridge Park is a small, charming Birmingham suburb that sits within the artsy Woodlawn Community and is a stone’s throw from the hip Eastlake neighborhood and the scenic trails of Ruffner Mountain. “It’s an area with multigenerational inhabitants,” says Jamie Goff, an Associate Broker at ARC Realty. “You have people who have lived here for decades and raised their kids here and young professionals just getting started. It’s a good mix of generations and cultures.” The Woodlawn community, which includes East Avondale, Oak Ridge Park, Woodlawn and South Woodlawn, was settled by a group of farming families in 1815. In 1910, the City of Woodlawn was annexed into Birmingham, but the area has maintained its strong community spirit. “There’s a real sense of community in this area,” says Goff. “You don’t see that everywhere—just neighbors being neighbors.”

Sports fields and mountain views
For sports facilities, residents can visit Lewis Park, just north of the neighborhood. The park features a baseball field, a multipurpose green field, basketball courts, a swimming pool and a playground for children. When residents want to play a friendly game of tennis, they head to Crestwood Park’s tennis courts, which sit southwest of the neighborhood. Meanwhile, Ruffner Mountain is right next door. The 1,038-acre nature preserve offers several scenic hiking and biking trails. In the spring, fragrant hydrangeas bloom, providing a pretty backdrop for visitors exploring the park. One of the best views in Alabama can be found in this park. Rolling hills, wooded city streets and downtown Birmingham’s cityscape can all be seen from Hawk’s Eye Overlook. The overlook can be accessed via the Quarry trail, which starts at the Nature Center and is a roughly 3.5-mile out-and-back hike. The Quarry Trail winds through the forest, so hikers can easily spot local wildflowers, birds and other wildlife. Remnants of the Sloss-Sheffield Mines can be found along the trail, a little slice of the Magic City’s incredible industrial history.
