Established suburban neighborhood outside of Birmingham
Home to Birmingham's first public high school for Black students and several stops on Birmingham’s Civil Rights Heritage Trail, Smithfield is a community with deep historic roots preparing for upcoming grant-funded developments. Largely consisting of closely plotted single-family homes connected by narrow sidewalks, Smithfield’s residential areas are broken up by scattered small businesses which have grown fewer in number over the years. Community tends to gather around the historic Parker High School, Smithfield Library and Smithfield Community Center, and the urban amenities of downtown Birmingham are less than 2 miles away. Through the strong sense of neighborhood pride instilled in residents of Smithfield and upcoming place-based housing, employment and education developments, Smithfield’s community is looking forward to revitalizing their identity as a hub of suburban living outside of Birmingham.

Grassy blocks of historic homes
Historic homes built in the 1930s make up much of the housing in Smithfield, with shotgun homes and bungalows painted in a variety of colors and pointing small porches lined with chairs over grassy yards being a common find. Some of the neighborhood’s housing is recently updated, while other homes have chipping paint, boarded windows or partially collapsed roofs. “We have such beautiful historic homes, but a lot of them are in need of investment,” says Pat Davis, President of the Smithfield Neighborhood Association. Prices range widely, with empty lots and fixer-upper housing selling for upward of $20,000 and renovated options going for $100,000 to $150,000. Many residents have held onto their homes over decades or across generations, making the real estate market fairly sparse with new listings.

Local businesses of Smithfield
A handful of businesses are sprinkled throughout Smithfield, and a mix of vacant and populated commercial buildings stand off of 3rd Avenue North and 9th Avenue North. Residents can pick up some essentials at the Family Dollar, but a lack of grocery stores within Smithfield leads many locals to travel to options like the Piggly Wiggly in North Birmingham. Rib-It-Up is a family-owned barbecue spot popular with locals for their sandwiches, sides and desserts, and those seeking a community bar specializing in frozen multi-colored beverages need to look no further than Birmingham Daquiris.

Multi-faceted community development in Smithfield
The Smithfield Court public housing community was developed in the 1930s and provides residents with several blocks of affordable housing north of Reverent Abraham Woods Jr. Boulevard. Over the next decade, the Housing Authority of the Birmingham District will provide private and public funding to redevelop Smithfield Court’s affordable and mixed-rate housing, as well as bettering early education and workforce training, access to community spaces and connectivity to the Civil Rights Heritage Trail for the entire Smithfield community. “People wouldn’t leave Smithfield for all the tea in China,” says Davis. “We’re all hopeful that this investment from the city will increase employment opportunities and businesses within our community.”
