Working class community close to nearby employers and local businesses

Pratt City's community is steeped in Birmingham's industrial history, from mining to manufacturing. For Pratt City's suburb of South Pratt, residents have seen the closing of the surrounding mines and the expansion of Ensley's manufacturing from the early 20th century to the years after the Second World War. Today, residents live in the same pre-war bungalows and post-war ranch-style homes that housed miners and plant workers. Many residents work in the bordering manufacturing and water treatment plants. South Pratt is within 5 miles of restaurants, public parks and major roadways leading to Downtown Birmingham.

South Pratt is surrounded by manufacturing, with Vulcan Materials to the west and Birmingham Fasteners to the east. The Jefferson County Waste Water Treatment plant also borders the neighborhood to the west. Railroad tracks run along the community's northern border, which results in some ambient noise for nearby residents. Pre-war bungalows and post-war ranch-style homes feature covered front porches. The community is comprised mainly of homeowners and a small percentage of renters. Home prices range from $10,000 to $85,000. Homes with lower prices typically need extensive repairs. The Birmingham Comprehensive Plan is a revitalization initiative to repair and incentivize investment in Birmingham neighborhoods, including South Pratt.
