Forested suburb close to Red Mountain Park Lawson State Community College
The Grasselli Chemical Company's expansion in the early 20th century created a demand for suburban communities like West Goldwire. Initially developed for Grasselli Company managers, today, those original brick ramblers and craftsman bungalows line the winding streets of a close-knit community that sits just north of the lush Red Mountain Park and just south of Lawson State Community College. Neighborhood cleanups, bike rides and other activities are frequent thanks to West Goldwire's active neighborhood association, and residents are never more than 7 miles away from nearby shopping and major highways. Investment in housing renovations and preservation as well as public transit is part of the upcoming Birmingham City Plan, a comprehensive investment plan to improve the city as a whole.

Pre-war bungalows and post-war ramblers on winding suburban streets
Most residents live in homes developed during the Grasselli company's expansion. Winding streets feature a mix of spacious ranch-style homes and split-level houses. Some homes have full-brick exteriors, but most have spacious front lawns and paved driveways. Homes in the southern section of the neighborhood offer views of Red Mountain Park from the bottom of the mountain slope. Residents are evenly split between homeowners and renters. Homes rarely appear on the market, but when they do, prices can range between $100,000 and $215,000.
